What had gone before

The party, comprised of:
Evarus and Armigil, two Dorns
Keelosh, a Dworg
Morthik, a Dwarf
Gac, a Gnome

had all found themselves on board an Elven ship via different routes, but all had in common the desire to fight the Izrador, the Shadow in the North in some fashion, whether they had formulated the goal as such in their minds. The basic decision that led each of them here however was a desire to join a resistence movement against the evil forces that control the central plains of Eredane, and besiege the elves in their great forest of Erethor and the dwarves in their Kaladrun mountain strongholds. This ship, "Eredane's Hope" had linked up with many others in the so called "Ghost Raft", a conglomoration of Vessels on "The Sea of Pelluria". There the party met each other and interacted with the crew of the ship and other members of the resistence. They were introduced to Eliael, an Erunsil (snow elf) who introduced the party to their first mission, a journey on the Plains of Erenhead to the edge of the southern Kaladruns where a Halfling tribe was creating problems for the dwarves in a Clanhold in the region. The halfling riders, attempting to protect some of the local settlements of their settled kin, often led Orcs and goblins to the edge of the mountains on a long chase, often fighting them but just as often retreating away once the settlements were safe. This led the orcs into conflict with the dwarves.

The goal of the 'free peoples of Eredane' working together, rather than seperately was put forth, and the party accepted the journey, which seemed to be as much a way for them to be trained and introduced to some of the ways of the resistence than to actually help in this specific mission. Eliael suggested however that some of the party might have specific expertise that could be of help.

Not long into their time on board the ship, Gac revealed to the rest that one of the elves, Caranev, who appeared to have a friendship or possibly more with Eliael, had featured in a dream he had just before the gnome arrived on the ship. It appeared that in the dream, Caranev led an orc fleet to the "Ghost Raft" where "Eredane's Hope" was captured. Coincidentally enough, Caranev was nowhere to be found a day before the mission was to begin. Taking heed, even if not believing that Caranev could have betrayed her, Eliael soon discovered that a large orc fleet was clumsily attempting to encircle the "Ghost Raft" before moving in. The vessels scattered.

It appeared that the ship would make it through the closing ring without serious trouble, until happening upon another vessel that had been captured by the orcs. It was on fire, and when a man was spotted in the water, swimming towards the ship, Keelosh threw himself overboard in an attempt to reach him. This was not according to the plans of Eliael, and the elves were forced to officially blow their cover. Their way of dealing with it was to sink the Orc vessel with fireballs and other spells, sending both the minions of Izrador, and their innocent captives to the bottom of the sea. The man swimming, named Danyd, was rescued however, and it was discovered that he had an item of interest to be taken to a small village a short way off the path the group would take.

The party was asked if they would prefer to stay with the main group the whole way, or split off to assist Danyd on his trip. They were told that they could then meet up at the Halfling camp afterwards. The group decided to take the side trip once they reached the point to split up, and were told that Arunae, one of the elves (a Caransil, wood elf), would go with them to help.

Once on land, the group the party was with said farewell to a separate group led by Rhiann, an elven woman with pure black eyes who at times seemed to take on a separate personality when speaking. While the party had little interaction with her and her group (save the battle with the Orc ship in which she was one of the primary spellcasters), they did learn that her group was on its way to dwarven territory in the northern Kaladrun mountains.

On the way, the party ran into a dead animal with carrion birds that seemed strangely hesitant to feed on the carcass. When they got closer, beetle like bugs flew from the carcass and attacked the party. No damage was caused even though one excreted a substance onto Keelosh. The substance caused a mild itching but nothing further. Later on the journey, Arunae tested the willing members who were interested to see if they had any magical aptitude. Only Evarus was able to pass the test, which involved creating a flicker in an otherwise normal appearing stone.

The party was told they would meet with a group of reisistence fighters at an outcropping of rock in the middle of the plains, where information and supplies would be exchanged. When they arrived, the party discovered two felinoid creatures prowling the outcropping. They didn't come out to attack the party, but they weren't frightened off as animals often would be by a relatively large group of humanoids, leading some of the party to recommend investigating carefully.

We left off at this point, with the party deciding how to proceed... (The next post will be a bit more 'scene specific').

Chapter 1 - Scene 1.0

OOC Note:
[sblock]From my last e-mails to this scene, I know that Morthik scouted the rocks and returned to report. I'm unsure if Evarus or Armigil also went.[/sblock]

Most of the elves in the party have disappeared into the grass, spreading out as they often do when the group stops, in order to keep watch. Eliael remains with the other new recruits to the resistance and Danyd, as Morthik, Arunae and the others move off towards the rocks in order to get a closer look at the two creatures appearing to prowl over the outcropping. Eliael doesn't engage anyone in conversation, seeming ill at ease on the open plain and she's seemed a shadow of her more animated self when she was aboard "Eredane's Hope". The grey sky from which rain rarely comes and the haze that prevents seeing the mountains off to the east, or for that matter much of anything to any great distance, might have something of an effect as well on the group's members.

Eventually Morthik and the others return with Arunae reporting that the creatures on the outcropping are large felines, and while they seemed aware of the party's presence, they neither came forward to attack, nor did they leave the rocks. Morthik, apparently having seen similar animals in the mountains of his home, adds in the Orcish language:

"That is not like any cat I've seen or heard of. They seem to be guarding, not hunting."

Evarus works his mouth around a little, as if chewing on a reply. "If it doesn't look like they're going to attack, and they're not scared away, shouldn't we -- maybe -- go around?" His tone is a little hesitant, owing perhaps partly to his youth and partly because it sounds a little cowardly.

Chapter 1 - Scene 1.1

Arunae glances at Evarus and smiles, "Well, we don't need to camp out on the rocks, but this is the meeting place we've prearranged with another group of those who fight the Shadow. We don't know for sure that they'll come, but we should try to exchange news and possibly supplies if possible." He pauses to think, "Although we do know the likely direction of their arrival. If we keep watch we should be able to contact them before they disturb those creatures."

He translates both Evarus's comment and apparently his response for Eliael's benefit. The pale elf casts a glare at the outcrop, but without saying a word she nods in apparent assent. A moment later she murmurs something to Arunae and then vanishes into the grass. Arunae says:

(Erenlander and Orcish)
"She wishes we could use the rocks for cover as we'll be here tonight, when minions of the Shadow are most active, but we'll just need to keep careful watch."

The Dworg, Keelosh, shrugs his shoulders and says:

(Orcish)
"Why not just kill them? It'd be some fresh meat instead of that dried stuff the elves have."

Arunae translates and Morthik seems to agree with the sentiment, although the act of agreeing with a Dworg doesn't seem to sit quite right with him.

Keeping to the edge and, as is usually the case, wearing a heavy frown, Armigil notes quietly, "I would prefer not to bathe the ground with blood, attracting other predators, for the sake of mere convenience. I will keep watch."

His hand wraps more tightly around his bow, and he looks to the distance, as if content to begin such a watchful state this very moment.

Chapter 1 - Scene 1.2

While Keelosh mutters something about fresh meat, he quickly enough offers to take a watch. Eventually Eliael returns and a quick discussion appears to indicate that everyone is in agreement on the plan which is to wait one day before continuing on. Arunae reveals that before the groups split up, Rhiann had given word that another party would be attempting to meet them here and that if they hadn't already arrived before your group that it wouldn't be more than a couple of days later. Arunae also adds that if your group must travel on first, they'll leave a sign which will let the other group know that they've moved on towards the halfling village.

The afternoon and early evening pass uneventfully enough, with Evarus, Arunae and another elf taking over from the first watch. Arunae takes the opportunity after their watch to sit with Evarus at the early evening meal to explain a bit more about the nature of magic. Sometimes he gets a bit enthusiastic and his explanations tend towards the technical, but he seems able to know when to backtrack to explain things in metaphors that make sense to Evarus.

The second watch passes without incident, although the cats on the rock can be heard from your location. They appear to be more active at night, their low yowls carrying, but muted by the distance and heaviness of the air. Armigil and Eliael with one of the older appearing Caransil (wood elf) take the third watch. Even though no hint of rain is present, neither is a hint of stars overhead as the low cloud deck obscures them.

OOC Note: Armigil
[sblock]The current watch pattern is a triangle around the camp. You're located between the camp and the outcropping. You hear a change in the tone of one of the cats, the other having gone silent moments before. Instead of the low yowl, you hear a hiss and a growl. The combination seems to say "Stay away". Given that you've been rather still for the past hour or so and the wind's blowing from the outcropping in your direction, it seems unlikely the warning is directed at you.[/sblock]

The Wildlander on watch issues a glance at the elves before touching his finger to his lips and then gesturing, palm outward, for calm and for them to remain there. Then, bow in hand, he moves as noiselessly as possible in the direction of the most recent feline growl.

Chapter 1 - Scene 1.3

OOC Note: Armigil
[sblock]In spite of not being able to see very far, you rely on the other senses you've learned to hone. You near the outcropping and sense something in front of you, between the pile of rocks and the annoyed feline. But then you misstep, and the clack of two stones as your foot moves one into the other, sounds loud to your ears. Apparently it does to the ears of the shape in front of you as you hear Orcish being spoken. The tone sounds like a challenge, but you don't understand the language. The cat on the rocks raises the level of its yowl and you hear the sound of an arrow being shot from off to the right, not from the form in front of you. It bounces off the rocks, apparently someone had an eye on turning the feline into a meal.[/sblock]

As the watch continues, the yowl of one of the cats suddenly increases in pitch and volume. Evarus, deep in some dream, doesn't hear it, and only one elf rouses from her slumber, picking up her head as if wondering if she heard something.

As quietly as possible, Armigil drops to the turf, crouching in the darkness, hood drawn over his head to keep the gleam of any nighttime light off of his shaved head. He also nocks an arrow, breath held.

Orcish.

Hate begins to bubble.

Chapter 1 - Scene 1.5

OOC Note: Armigil
[sblock]Unfortunately, whatever you sense up ahead can see you or at least sense your presence. A louder growl comes now, and the figure suddenly moves towards you, fast. Something in its motion seems to indicate that a weapon is being raised. It shouts a command which is quickly echoed by two other guttural voices in the night air.[/sblock]

Eliael's shout to the camp is heard by all. "Orcs! At least three! Gather weapons! Arunae, we need light for the humans!" This is of course said in High Elven, but Arunae, on waking, quickly repeats it in Erenlander and Orcish for the benefit of the others.

OOC Note:
Everyone is surprised except Eliael, the other Caransil on watch and Armigil. No one has armor on. Actions?

OOC Note: Masozi
[sblock]You've been riding for well over a couple of weeks now, and feel relief that the promised outcropping should be seen shortly. It's the middle of the night when faint shouts are heard in the night air. The distance is hard to tell. The glance of your Caransil companion indicates he's heard it too. He tells the two Sarcosan riders with you, quickly, and they immediately settle into a gallop, your horse instinctively following.[/sblock]
