H1 H2 level overlaps?

I noticed H1 is listed as 1-3 and H2 is listed as 4-6... Is this standard fare for a string of adventures? Should I expect to write (or use ddi) to get the characters to 4 prior to H2? Anybody use the downtime to give some extra XP to bump them at the end of H1 to start with some fresh goodies at H2?

I haven't run any published adventures before, so I'm curious about the standard progression of such... thanks for the advice in advance.

H1 notes you should reach level 4 by its end. There are also additional encounters for H1 in the most recent issue of Dungeon magazine.

As a note, there are 19,578 XP available through the standard (non-quest) encounters in H1. For a part of five PCs, that will bring them to 3,915 XP each, or just into 4th level. Quest XP will give them more, of course, as will supplementary encounters.

Cheers!

I don't own either of the adventures in question, so might well be wrong, but my guess is that you'll see characters reaching 4th level just as they get to the end of H1. That way, they should be just about ready for the start of H2.

At least, that seems to be the way these things usually work.

I haven't run H1, but I will be running some scenes from it in my "teach my players 4e" playtest this weekend.

In 3.5, the adventure level range varied on how much "mega" the adventure had in it. For example, a typical Dungeon Magazine adventure was 2 levels, especially the individual Adventure Path chapters. Some companies did larger adventures that would take characters from 1-10 or 4-10.

Usually, in the first few pages of the adventure, in the summary usually, they will tell you about how many levels that a PC Party should expect to gain over the course of the adventure.

Basically H1 listed as 1-3 means that this is the level range you get to play, and at the end, you might or should reach a higher level. A smaller group might get quite far into level 4, a larger group might barely get level 3. But this should still all work out overall...

We're playing thru H1 right now (with 4 PCs in the group) and are already 3rd level at approximately the halfway point according to the DM. We'll easily be 4th level at the end of the adventure, and maybe 5th.

Good news about the extra encounters!

I got H2 while at Origins and I must say that I'm gladly surprised by the adventure. Yes, H1 will get you into 4th level with a standard party of 5. Remember to add more creatures/challenges if the party is larger than 5 and you'll be okay. A party of 4 will have some difficulties so you might want to adjust the challenges also for smaller parties.

I've got seven players, so I'm planning on adding some extra creatures here, there and everywhere to make sure everyone gets enough XP.
