The reason that the paladin can mark at a range is so that they can charge a target they have marked instead of having to charge first. At least, that's what I think, not sure if that will matter that often even.

Could you explain? I didnt get the figure.
 

Say you're a human in plate armor and 8 squares from an enemy you want to mark. You can move close enough for charge distance (which is 5 squares since plate reduces speed), Divine Challenge the enemy, and then charge.
If Divine Challenge was a Melee power, however, you would have to move, charge, Divine Challenge. If you are a Champion of Order, you couldn't gain your extra damage against demons and elemental creatures in the latter case.
