Standard Drow Gear by Level

Here's a first pass at some generic gear by level for drows. Note that since Drow have a +2 level adjustment, they get gear like characters two levels higher than than their character level (well, at least depending upon which WotC source you read). This puts their gear levels pretty close to what is shown in the old modules:

1st-level gear (2,500 gp total value): +1 chain shirt (1,250 gp), masterwork buckler (165 gp), masterwork short sword (310 gp), masterwork dagger (302 gp), hand crossbow and 10 bolts (101 gp), drow poison (4 doses, 300 gp), 72 gp.

2nd-level gear (3,300 gp total value): +1 chain shirt (1,250 gp), masterwork buckler (165 gp), masterwork short sword (310 gp), masterwork dagger (302 gp), masterwork hand crossbow and 10 bolts (401 gp), drow poison (5 doses, 375 gp), potion of spider climb (300 gp), 197 gp.

AD&D didn’t have anything like the standardized gear per level that 3e has. So in the original modules, the drow have lots and lots of extremely nice equipment, including weapons, armor, cloaks, boots, etc. These items usually had enhancement bonuses -- even though they were non-magical <snip>.

Personally, I was leaning toward treating all drow equipment as non-magical magical items, <snip> They are powered by weird underground radiation, <snip>

One consequence: the price tag on the <magic items> means they are no longer standard issue to each and every drow. <snip>

Drow chain is a little trickier. I was initially going to convert these items as regular chain shirts with the appropriate enhancement bonuses. But one could treat them like elven chain. But elven chain is awful pricey compared with with straight-up magic chain.

As diaglo had pointed out earlier in this thread, City of the Spider Queen <may> be a close reference to conversion of these adventures. Checking that text, I had found that most drow were equiped with masterwork chain shirts (levels 1-2), Mithral shirts (levels 3-5), Mithral (elven) chain mail (levels 5+), etc with enhancements added beyond that.
Which leads me to your next question:

Yes. Elven (Mithral) chain, or any other armor/weapons made of Mithral can have enhancements added to it (note that all Mithral is already considered masterwork).
Mithral is great, because it does not detect as magic, which is similar to 1E, as you pointed out.

Thoughts: that the +1 Chain shirts you have suggested be replaced by Mithral shirts. The cost is very similar (1,100 gp). :)

I can get behind that idea. I assume elven chain, like a mithral shirt, is considered a masterwork item?

Yes, you are correct Garnfellow. Elven chain is exactly the same as Chain mail made of Mithral (DMG, pg. 284: Or SRD: Special Materials).

DMG said:
"...Weapons or armors fashioned from mithral are always masterwork items as well; the masterwork cost is included in the price..."

Also note: the Mithral shirt (and possibly the Elven/mithral Chain mail) are not bad choices for the Male Ftr/Wiz, as the Arcane failure is only 10% (20% for mail).

Garnfellow said:
I would propose handling drow cloaks and boots the same way: just like elven cloaks and boots in terms of pricing and game mechanics, only powered by radiation rather than magic. One consequence: the price tag on the cloaks and boots means they are no longer standard issue to each and every drow.

Again, checking with City of the Spider Queen, I see that adventure also agrees with your reasoning here Garnfellow. Most 'common' drow no longer have magic cloaks/boots. However, many of the drow have taken the Stealthy feat, which helps to componsate for this.

You know, mithral shirts were not even on my radar before you suggested them. (I think I may have been blurring them and elven chain together.) But the more I look at them, the nicer they appear. No armor check penalty and only 10% spell failure is pretty sweet.

I redid most of my equipment by level chart to include mithral and drow chain, and will post later today.

While I retool my gear charts, I thought I’d post a few thoughts about converting drow fighter types.

One of the biggest things about drow that have fallen away over the years is the distinction between male and female drow. In 1st Edition, female drow were superior in every conceivable way: smarter, stronger, faster, to say nothing of being tougher, wiser, and more attractive.

So how to model this in a conversion? I understand that in Green Ronin’s Plot and Poison book, they had subraces of drow that had different ability (and presumably, level and CR) adjustments for the different sexes. That seems a bit more radical than I’d want.

So I propose converting all unnamed male fighters into 3e warriors with the non-elite array of ability scores, straight out of the Monster Manual: Str 13, Dex 13, Con 10, Int 12, Wis 9, Cha 10.

All unnamed female fighters could be converted into 3e fighters with the elite array, resulting in the following ability scores after applying racial adjustments: Str 10, Dex 17, Con 12, Int 10, Wis 13, Cha 14.

This results in the male fighter-types being a little stronger and a little smarter than the females, but the females are much more nimble, perceptive, and forceful. This all seems in keeping with the spirit of D1-2-3. One could imagine that the most promising females are all sent to elite fighting schools to hone their abilities, while any able-bodied male gets summarily dragooned into a general militia.

For feat selection, I’d keep the males fairly suboptimal: first Weapon Focus (shortsword), then Weapon Focus (hand crossbow), and then maybe some skill improvers like Alertness.

For the female fighters, I would propose the following generic feat selection:

1st level: Weapon Finesse, Weapon Focus (short sword)
2nd Level: Two-Weapon Fighting
3rd Level: Stealthy
4th Level: Weapon Specialization (short sword)
6th Level: Dash, Combat Reflexes
8th Level: Double Hit
9th Level: Improved Initiative

This feat progression is designed to focus of the fighter’s strength with the short sword and two-weapon fighting. I imagine a shortsword with dagger and buckler is a common drow style.

The Dash feat from the Miniatures Handbook adds 5-ft to base movement in light or no armor. In 1st Edition female drow had a 15” move compared to a male’s 12”.

The Double Hit feat, also from the Miniatures Handbook, allows a two-weapon wielder to use both weapons in an attack of opportunity.

I could also see many female drow fighters as Fighter/Rogues, probably taking 1 Rogue level for every two fighters. Listen, Spot, Hide, and Move Silently are all cross-class if you are just using Fighter levels, and the Sneak Attack ability seems like a pretty natural fit for the drow.

Finally, I could see an alternate feat selection for female drow fighters that emphasizes ranged combat. The D&D Miniatures game has a drow archer who uses a composite shortbow, and although the drow are never mentioned using this weapon in D1-2-3, it seems natural enough. For these fighters, the following might be a sensible feat selection:

1st level: Point Blank Shot, Weapon Focus (composite shortbow)
2nd Level: Precise Shot
3rd Level: Dodge
4th Level: Weapon Specialization (composite shortbow)
6th Level: Mobility, Rapid Shot
8th Level: Improved Precise Shot
9th Level: Shot on the Run

Actually, maybe levels in the Scout class (from Complete Adventurer) would really capture a drow archer. Anyway, enough of that tangent!

For the conversion library the coversions kinda go under the OGL and none of the material from the Complete books are OGL. I'd hope when your finish you submit it for the library :) Just a thought...

I'd go with straight fighter for the archers.

Typical Male Drow Warrior Progression

Here's a typical progression for average male warriors through 7th level. (In 1st edition male drows were all 2nd-7th level fighters, so I didn't go any higher for this conversion exercise.)

Most sergeants and other leader types in D1-2-3 had atlatl and poisoned javelins instead of the hand crossbow. I don't have the stats for these weapons handy, but it might be worthwhile to give all male warriors these weapons and give hand crossbows only to the female fighters, in order to further distinguish the two sexes. Although some male drow in D1-2-3 use the iconic bucklers, many have light shields and I adopted this to again distinguish the two drow sexes.

A couple of other points about this conversion. Following the lead of the Miniatures Handbook, I have substituted in veil of shadows for darkness as a spell-like ability. I think veil of shadows is a much more playable power, but YMMV.

I have also assigned all of the drow the chaotic evil alignment, in keeping with the original modules. I understand and largely agree with the 3e designers about making most drow NE, but for old-time's sake I wanted to go with tradition. Again, YMMV.

Text in red underline are my backup calcs. Please nit-pick away.

Male Drow Warrior 1: CR 1; Medium Humanoid (elf); HD 1d8; hp 4; Init +1 (+1 Dex); Spd 30 ft; AC 16, touch 11, flat-footed 15 (+4 mithral shirt, +1 light steel shield, +1 Dex); BAB +1; Grp +2; Atk/Full Atk +4 melee (1d6+1/19–20, masterwork short sword) (+1 BAB, +1 Str, +1 masterwork, +1 Weapon Focus) or +2 ranged (1d4/19–20, hand crossbow) (+1 BAB, +1 Dex); SA poison, spell-like abilities; SQ darkvision 120 ft, drow traits, spell resistance 12; AL CE; SV Fort +2, Ref +1, Will -1 (Warrior F+2, R+0, W+0; Con +0, Dex +1, Wis -1); Str 13, Dex 13, Con 10, Int 12, Wis 9, Cha 10.

Skills: Hide +2, Listen +3, Search +4, Spot +3.

Feats: Weapon Focus (short sword) 1st level.

Spell-Like Abilities (caster level 1): Once per day: dancing lights, faerie fire, veil of shadows.

Drow Traits: Immunity to sleep spells and effects, +2 racial saving throw bonus against enchantment spells or effects; +2 racial bonus on Will saves against spells and spell-like abilities. +2 racial bonus on Listen, Search, and Spot checks. An drow who merely passes within 5 feet of a secret or concealed door is entitled to a Search check to notice it as if she were actively looking for it.

Possessions (2,500 gp total value): mithral shirt (1,100 gp), masterwork light steel shield (159 gp), masterwork short sword (310 gp), masterwork dagger (302 gp), hand crossbow and 10 bolts (101 gp), drow poison (4 doses, 300 gp), 228 gp.

Skills (Warrior): Climb 0 ranks (+1 Str), Handle Animal 0 ranks (+0 Cha), Intimidate 0 ranks (+0 Cha), Jump 0 ranks (+1 Str), Hide 2/2 ranks (+1 Dex), Listen 4/2 ranks (-1 Wis, +2 racial bonus), Ride 0 ranks (+1 Dex), Search 2/2 ranks (+1 Int, +2 racial bonus), Spot 4/2 ranks (-1 Wis, +2 racial bonus), Swim 0 ranks (+1 Str, -2 armor check) = 12 (12 skill points)

NOTE: Number of feats is derived as follows: 1 at 1st = 1.
