Help! I need a hook.

We are starting our round robin gaame up today. Baasically what this means is everyone gets to be DM at some point, I just get to go first. Anyway by some twist of fate we are all Elves or 1/2 elves. I need a reason to send the characters from the great forest they live in to the nearby Himan Kingdom of Orel. The land has just seen the end of another great orc war. THe men of Orel took part but the elves, for themost part did not, prefereing to stay and defend their forest should the orcs break through the Humans. The Elves and Men have had a pact basically for generations, humans don't screw with the greaat forest and the elves don't screw with men and they both help each other in war.

The king, Ulrick the Red of Orel, is a little ticked that the Elven King didn't send as many troops to help as Ulrick would have liked. My hook so far is either the PC's are escorting a Diplomat to the court of Ulrick to represent the Elves, or maybe returning a weapon that the elves re forged for the king.....really I am at a loss here...any help would be appreciated.

More details please.
What classes are we working with?
What kind of adventure are you looking for? Roleplay intensive? Slugfest?
Give us more to go on, and we'll be able to do more.

Classes are:
Wood Elf Ranger2/ Rogue1
High Elf Druid 3
High Elf Fighter 2/Wizard 1
Half Elf Rogue2/Barbarian 1 (he is the resident power gamer)

I really just need to get them to the King and once there I can send them out on adventures and such. I guess a mix of slugging and roleplaying would be fine, say 65 slugging, 35 roleplaying

Just make the PC's the troops the elves sent, a classic too few too late. The political implications could be fun.

And throw in an NPC or two that can be a replacement PC if a PC dies.

How about: Ulrick is more than a little annoyed. He's furious enough to cut the elves' trade, blockade their forest and even do a little pillaging around the forest edge in an effort to replenish his coffers. If the elves wouldn't send troops they can at least help finance the effort! The elves, aware of this, are indeed sending a diplomat. But this diplomat is a close relative of the elf king/queen/whatever and is being delivered as an implicit hostage to placate Ulrick. With this "guest" in his court he can count on elvish assistance in the future and the peace can be maintained.

But of course, delivering the diplomat won't be as easy as they'd like...

Teh PC's cant be troops for the war as the war has been over for a bit now, say more thaaan a year or two. I like the diplomat idea. Using a bit of that theme and a bit of my own I think this is the hook. Tell me what you all think. Ulrick died in the war. He had no heir to the thrown so it passed to his nearest male blood relative, A Duke that the elves are not familiar with. With the war over it is safe for the Elven diplomat to return to ORel aand resume their duties. As the PC's are trusted and skilled heroes, they are sent to escort the diplomat ( along with some elven soldier NPC's), however , as they approach the border of elf and human lands it is apparent that the men have been stripping the forest (recouping some lost resources etc...) Once the elves arrive at the court it is certain that this King has no love or trust for Elves....in order to prove themselves to him they must perform some minor duties (adventures)

Excellent. Plausible, with some serious consequences to motivate the PCs, but not a huge crisis.

Very good.

Power gamers don't play half elves. ;)

Your ideas sound good as long you don't have completely uncooperative players.

and Ulrick spoke highly of the elves his whole life.

even his death words were: "when the elves arrive all will be set right."

of course, they never did come in time.

so many of the humans are now holding a grudge for the death of their beloved king ulrick. ulrick the betrayed. as the elves never held up their end...

well now it's not flat out betrayal. Ulrick's lands were not threatend in the war, however a huge trade city near his lands were. He saw a chance to roll in as liberater and score this huge resource for his lands. Since there was no threat to the lands of Orel or the Elves, the elves decided not to become involved but to stay near their lands and protect aagainst any other orcs or fleeing orcs who may be seeking refuge in the great forest. Ulrick certainly felt slighted in the fact that only a token force of Elves did decide to go along with his army and it will take some dipomaatic repairing of the relationship between the two......but there sure won't be aa war in the neaar future of Elves and the Men of Orel.
