Have looked at the factotum: you are right. i will see how the DM is defining "encounter" for the purpose of the factotum's per-encounter abilities...

If I may, I don't really have a class in mind, but for a race of gnome I'd suggest Chaos Gnome from Races of Stone. Seems to really fit the "OOOHHHH what's this buttin do?" kinda character.
