You continue on your way for only a short while, until...

OOC: Listen checks and initiative rolls, please! (Somebody do me a favor and play Fimble? I'll assign him randomly if I have no volunteers.)

You walk through the wooden corridor until it ends on a short wooden ramp into a small cavern, with a balcony to left, about 10' high. Four wooden poles support it. Tommy's map book indicates that there is a secret door to your right, and he knows how to open it (it would take about 6 seconds), but that is not the direction you need to go to reach the surface. The cavern narrows and continues ahead, eventually leading to a small cavern just beneath the surface.

Suddenly Tarag hears quiet padding of feet, and he warns everybody to prepare for the worst. Your weapons already at the ready, you're not terribly surprised when two halflings on riding dogs appear from the tunnel ahead. The door to the balcony opens and three humanoids prepare to attack you from above with shortbows: A half-orc, a gnome, and a half-elf.

[sblock=The Map]The balcony: There are two levels: the balcony on the left is suspended 10' above the cavern floor. The cavern floor extends all the way to the cavern walls beneath the balcony. There is a door on the left side of B2.

Squares completely covered by balcony (C1, B2, A3) have total cover from ranged attacks from the balcony. Squares partially covered by the balcony (D1, C2, B3, A4) have cover from the balcony (+4 to AC).

The supports: Four supports occupy squares D1, C2, B3, and A4. Like trees, these supports grant a +2 AC bonus, +1 reflex save bonus, and can be climbed with a DC 15 climb check. Unlike trees, they do not look terribly solid or supple...

The Secret Door: Tommy can tell anybody how to open the secret door as a free action. Opening the door (in the manner it was designed to be opened, anyway...) is a full-round action that provokes attacks of opportunity.[/sblock]

After casting, Fimble runs to shelter from arrows beneath the balcony.

Keldar leans forward and sends an arrow of his own towards the nearest figure on the balcony with deadly accuracy.[sblock=OOC]Fimble to B2. Keldar attacks 1: 1d20+7=26; damage 1d8+3=6, sneak attack if it applies 1d6=4[/sblock]

OOC: Tarag will probably take a 5 foot step to B3 and cast Bull's Strength. That may change, however, if he takes heavy damage in the surprise round.

I suggest that Fingers, Tommy and Fimble take the total cover positions (C1, B2, A3), since they have the lowest AC and hp.

Keldar's arrow thuds into the gut of the closest balustrade blaggard: the gnome. He grabs his stomach and groans, but remains standing.

Fimble flicks his fingers, rubs his middle, and brushes some dirt off his shoulders. Wherever his hand glides, a barely visible blue sheen is left behind. Within seconds, the translucent blue force armor covers his body. He dashes beneath the balcony.

The gnome that Keldar shot falls to the ground, prone.

The half-orc and half-elf fire at Tarag, standing practically defenseless in the middle of the room. The arrows deflect off of Tarag's armor, barely leaving a scratch. Then the two snipers drop prone, out of sight.

Tarag steps backwards, casting a spell. He readies himself for the oncoming assault by the halfling riders.

The riders do indeed attack. The woman halfling launches her handaxe at Tarag, and it buries itself in him. (7 damage to Tarag.) She grins evilly, and immediately another handaxe is in her hand.

Then her dog advances, snarling. At first it goes for Tarag, but its rider yanks its reins, directing its attention towards Tommy. The dog gnashes at Tommy's undefended legs, drawing blood. (4 damage to Tommy.)

The other dog bounds off of cavern walls as it approaches. This dog chomps ineffectually at Tarag's armored legs, while its rider lifts a dwarven waraxe with both hands and brings it crashing down on poor Tommy. At the last moment, Tommy's own blue mage armor flares up and deflects the hit. (Hits AC 11, 10 damage to Tommy.) (Note: Ignore the damage from the first roll, it is incorrect.)

OOC: Rae, how long have the party been travelling through the tunnels? At the beginning of the encounter with Fingers, Tommy cast Mage Armor, which would last for 4 hours. Since the guy with the dwarven waraxe hit AC 11, that would have missed if Tommy's Mage Armor spell was still in place.

Tommy reels, but has the presence of mind to step back and cast a spell that slicks the ground beneath and behind the attackers.

Fimble steps forward and envelops dogs and halflings alike in a swirling spray of colours.[sblock=OOC]Tommy 5' steps to D2, casts grease on B4 to C5 (DC 15 Ref). Fimble to C2, casts color spray (DC 16 Will).[/sblock]
