1-2-1 Diagonal Movement?

In 3E and previous editions, movement cost double for every other diagonal square. I understand the mathematical reasoning behind it.

Now tell me why 4E should keep the 1-2-1 cost system. Why not just dump it and have every square of movement cost the same. It greatly simplifies things and it applies to everyone so it's not like a PC-only advantage.

Yes, I realize it's not entirely accurate. But you know what? I'm alright with that in the name of simplifying and speeding up the game.

The questions that come to my mind:
-Does it break the game enough "harm" it?
-Does it really make the game better? Faster? Funnier?
