Judges (and others interested), I've discovered a major issue in the new Wiki that means we need to rethink how we will do character sheets. Please see this post and comment there.

So, a bit of a technical question regarding second characters: If, for instance, a player's first character were to earn enough XP to to attain second level (thus allowing a second character), but the first character had not yet had the chance to actually go through the leveling-up process before becoming dead, would the player actually be able to generate a second character? Or would they have only one character available, a replacement for the dead one (created at level 1, since the original character had not formally become second level)?

Just a hypothetical question, really. Doesn't have anything to do with an actual situation which might be happening real soon now...

IIRC, a dead character in a combat still gains XP. That character would still be second level (once the XP is given). You'd should then be able to create your second character while still having to decide what to do with your dead friend (assuming they aren't rezzed).

To have seen it happen in LEW, stonegod is right, we always have given XP to death characters, and that allowed some player to ressurect at there level, having gain a new one and losing one immediately because of Raise Dead (as it was in 3.5)

I wouldn't worry too much, given how quickly you guys munched the Emissary down to bloodied. Of course, if you don't keep up the pace, or if I start rolling well, there could be problems...

Sheesh Pathfinder have some faith next time. We totally got this (granted I was getting worried while the Emissary was still alive).

There's L4W precedent for this. In Closed Eye, Palindrome died in a battle, but by the time he died, he had earned enough xp for 3rd level, through time XP and completing a minor quest mid-battle. He was awarded that XP posthumously and allowed to start his replacement character at level 3.

So, IMO, yes, if you die having earned enough for level 2, you can start your second character, even if the first character never actually was submitted for level 2.
