While it's absolutely true that Lemaitre doesn't get enough credit for his work (and I'm often guilty of using traditional nomenclature that doesn't acknowledge him), it's a bit of a stretch to say that he did for physics or even cosmology what Mendel did for genetics. Mendel wrote down the laws of genetics --- the basic concepts, Lemaitre's most important work "just" applied Einstein's laws of general relativity. Nonetheless, a too-often-overlooked scientist.

Yeah, you're right, I really should have used the term Cosmology instead of physics. I was typing fast last night. I thought about that after I went to bed.
