Google Statistics on the Edition Wars: D&D & Pathfinder [updated]

I think 3.5e is dragged along with Pathfinder, since you couldn't talk about without talking about the other until it was well established as a game in its own right.

And my experience is, that 4th Ed talk is mostly confined to the WotC-Forums. And inside that confined net-space, you don't need google.
Also, 4th Edition has no OGL content, and that's where you really need to google a lot.

The D&D vs. Pathfinder comparison is pretty deeply flawed, because it excludes any searches for D&D that don't include an edition. For example:

Insight search shows that D&D, dnd, "Dungeons and Dragons", and "Dungeons Dragons" all, individually, dwarf Pathfinder in the RPG category.
Actually ...

The fact searchers must enter several keywords in the “D&D 4e” result, but only a single keyword in the “pathfinder” result, is enormously distortive.

Adding two keywords to the “pathfinder” result, such as “pathfinder rpg”, shows results for “D&D 4e” are higher. Moreover, other combinations, such as “pathfinder game” (to distinguish from the vehicle) or “d&d pathfinder” show Pathfinder is insignificant compared to 4e.

While the upward trend for Pathfinder searches seems significant, and the reliability of 4e seems significant, the ratios between them are accidental. There is no way to control the study for valid comparisons.
