Excerpts: Hearth and Home

We continue with Chapter 3: Hearth and Home. "Every player whose character has been attacked at home, in bed, or has arrived home battered and weary after a hard adventure to find that home looted, burned to the ground, or under the bulk of a grinning dragon, knows the sickening shock, the violation, of having oneâ??s home messed with."

Obvious this book wont be to every taste, but I for one am sure glad to see a book that "grounds" the Realms instead of the thirtieth version since 1988 of:

Persona X is a member of Not So Secret Society Y, and is a Vampire Lich WereRat. X is trying to take over the country of Z by being really deceptive and mean and will use his powers that all who have been (multiple choice A: Shade B: Spell C: Undeath D: God) touched/plagued/afflicted , posess. In the end its likely of no real use to the DM as his plots will be foiled by a Goody Two Shoes NPC or NPC Group of the Novel Department's Choice, and everything invalidated in 2 to 5 years with another book that sucks even harder.

So far it's been stuff that could have been cribbed wholesale from a history book on medieval English society. Hopefully there's some acknowledgement in the book that people don't all live the same way, and descriptions of the alternatives. At least there haven't been any mage/superheroes in the extracts... so far.

It's grounded in the real world and at least semi-plausible. Baby steps, dude. :)
