D&D 4E gridless 4e

In our last session we did 3 big combats with no grid. We busted out the old wargaming terrain and just measured everything.

Played a little fast and loose with adjacency, and modified blasts to be an arc (90deg) instead of squares, but otherwise just ran it pretty straight.

It certainly felt just like 4e, tho there were a few little niggles. 2 PCs flanked 2 enemies at the same time because of the way the bases offset. You can't do that with squares. In some ways I think it went quicker, because you could just see where you wanted your mini to go and move him there.

I think it helped that all three fights were large outdoor encounters. We won't be doing this every time, but we could certainly do it again. It might come up again if there are some giant cool terrain battles as we transition to paragon tier.
