Painting minis is half the fun of them. Why wouldn't you want to do that? Sure, it takes time and practice (and ideally a hobby table), but the results can be both amazing and fun. And you have the satisfaction of seeing them in action on the battle mat. On time, mostly to weigh down/flatten the battle mat to the table, but also because the party was utterly destroying the monsters I'd custom made with annoying ease, I put a colossal skeletal dracolich type mini on the table. The players were so freaked out by seeing it that they started making tactical mistakes (not enough to save my poor monsters from their Die Rolls, however). Every round I moved the Dragon 8 squares, and made a big deal of counting squares to the most panicked of the player's minis. End of fight, I left it there. Let them loot the bodies. Waited. Finally I put them out of their misery. "Oh, this was just for the weight. It isn't actually there."
Sculpting that mini in 3d for the printer is going to be the hard part.
