The system at Carnegie Mellon University is called NEIL, short for Never Ending Image Learning. In mid-July, it began searching the Internet for images 24/7 and, in tiny steps, is deciding for itself how those images relate to each other. The goal is to recreate what we call common sense -- the ability to learn things without being specifically taught.

This is not common sense...it is porn!

"Could a giraffe fit in your car," she asked. "We'd have an answer, even though we haven't thought about it" in the sense of calculating a giraffe's body mass.

That's because the machine would have been deprived of information to make a definitive answer. A giraffe could fit in "your" car under the right circumstances which have not been defined.
Rhetorical:
How big is the giraffe?
How big is the automobile?
Would it be necessary to dismember and process a giraffe to accomplish the task?
Is it permissible to dismember and process the giraffe?

All these inquiries should be answered before making an accurate response to the primary question.
