An engagement ring is a shiny rock on some shiny metal. He probably gave it to her cuz she communicated that it was what she wanted. Doesn't mean he did it out of love, though.

Pretty obvious he didn't love her, but his stupidity is epic level if he thought giving her an engagement ring meant only "free" sex for a time with no strings attached

There were strings: She quit her job and he supported her. Like I said, though, it's a plan some guys use without fully understanding the plan's limitations. Panic reaction that can cause quite the spiral.
