Specific comments on a few of the books:

"1984" -- depressing that it is so true to life
"Series of Unfortunate Events" -- who wouldn't want to be named Lemony Snicket?
"Alice" -- get the original with illustrations by Tenniel; or try "The Annotated Alice" by Gardner
"Catch-22" -- hilarious, and a memorable movie was made of it
"Dune" -- lots of sand. And sand worms.
"Great Expectations" -- not so great. If you're doing Dickens, try others.
"Harry Potter" -- who hasn't?
"In Cold Blood" -- Capote also wrote "Breakfast at Tiffany's"
"Little House" -- famous. haven't read it
"Lolita" -- famous. haven't read it
"Pride & Prejudice" -- It's really a series of jokes: the author is being sarcastic. It ends abruptly after their marriage because the joke is over.
"Slaughterhouse Five" -- "let him write his own book"
"Anne Frank" -- assigned reading
Pullman -- religious agenda
Milne -- for children, so of course Disney made movies (and a lot of money)
"The Little Prince" -- author was a pilot over Africa for France, and also engages in flights of fantasy. Illustrations by the author.
Chandler -- if you like mysteries, he does them well
"Lord of the Rings" -- who hasn't?
"Phantom Tollbooth" -- "underceeding the speed limit! So Guilty!" (Officer Short-Shrift)
Stephen King -- wrote so much, so popular. Try some?
Hemingway -- ditto
"Wind in the Willows" -- for The Piper at the Gates of Dawn if nothing else
Tequila Mockingbird -- I'll drink to that
Silverstein -- always interesting
Sendak -- famous children's illustrator

-- what, no Dr. Seuss on the list? Dang!
