Strikes me as being like the latest Star Trek movies. This kinda makes sense. The Terminators send back a few androids to kill Connors and they fail. So instead of continuing to send later and later Terminators they send one earlier, which rewrites the present.
It's a reasonable way to reboot the franchise and start clean.
It'll likely still suck, as we've seen the story before and there's few new and interesting places to really take it. It's hard to add surprises when you know the predestined relationships. Sarah and Reese have to get it on and the former has to survive. There's almost no room there for twists or surprises. But, that describes 90% of action films.
Which means the movie has to opt for style over substance, and try to be a good retelling that is fun to watch. It has to be enjoyable as a film by itself. Tricky, but not impossible. And you never know: there could still be twists. They might kill Sarah shortly after she gives birth leaving Reese to raise John alone in a situation he never prepared for.
