The Untamed Wilds: Caravan Campaign

As children, you've grown up traveling with a a silk caravan that journeys between Asylim, the southern port city, and Boga City, the central trade hub of the continent. Being a rather large caravan, there is a cartwright, leather worker, blacksmith, and a master weaver.

The silk is collected from spider webs in the southern part of the Thelanerest Forest and woven as the caravan travels. The caravan returns with iron and tin.

As children, your group became friends and went on mini adventures together like friends would do. As you are now adults, conversations have engaged concerning a different future than the caravan life.

Sheldon is Centrin, having been born in Boga City. He is of medium build and height, light complexion with reddish-blond hair. He does not carry a weapon but shows a talent for weaponless combat. His closest companion is Indigo.

She is a Rheini, having been born to the caravan. Her mother, the caravan's herbalist, was born in the Siswa'alo Jungle east of Asylim. She is medium build but relatively short having a bronze complexion and long black wavy hair. She carries twin, single-edged swords the length of her arm.

Sheldon has a quiet, yet direct way of speaking. He states to the group one evening,

"I think it is time that we strike out on our own."

Southroad Fair

SF.jpeg

Southroad Fair is build upon a rivulet in the middle of the the strip of piney woods that run mostly east to west across the Southern Trade Road. The forest is about 3 day travel, by foot, in width. The buildings are marked by placards designating their function.

OOC: Places of Interest
The Boar's Head Tavern
The Trade Store
The Tannery
The Blacksmith
The Carpenters Guild
A Bath House
A Barber Shop
The Winery
Bunk Houses and Hammocks to Let
Various Residences

GM: The Rumors

One: A group of indigenous savages as taken to aggressive behavior at a location several days to the west where the hardwoods start to blend with the pines. The hostiles are pale skinned, move quickly, and use bows. They are killing everyone they meet as if establishing a base of operation in the area. Giodavi, the Tavern Keeper, and founder of Southroad Fair has established the most viable information on this subject.

Two: To the southeast, out of the forest and back into the badlands, there is a place the Rheins call the Hollow of Bones. It is reported to be a tiny vale with standing dead trees, the ground littered with bones. Stories allocate that the place is haunted. Swift Raven, the Tanner and an aged Rhein, is the most likely person to provide accurate information on this subject.

Three: To the northeast, several days but still within the pines, there is a large tree that is not a pine. The skulls of various animals hang from cords about the tree. Stories allocate the tree to be haunted. The guards or the hunters may provide more viable information on this subject.

The Tavern Keeper: Founder of Southroad Fair

Giodavi.jpg

Giodavi is a boisterous and demonstrative, middle-aged, Ansylin man who likes to be the center of attention. He appears to be forthright and honest despite his showmanship. His heartmate is the Store Keeper. He has met the party and has provided general information about the town and its growth.

He has also provided as much in depth information about the attacks to the west as could possibly be discovered.

The Tannery

Raven.jpg

Swift Raven, the Tanner, prefers, simply to be called Raven, no longer having the swiftness of youth. Raven is a middle-aged Rhein who has traveled with Giodavi before he founded Southroad Fair. He has a calm, factual way of speaking without diverging into much embellishment.

The party has contracted the Tanner to produce four pieces of armor from the pieces of lizard hide they provided. The agreed upon fee for the labor is 350 clams. The total time for completion is 4 days.

OOC: Scale Armored Skirt (mottled outside, blue inside) = Bolo
Hooded Lizard Tunic (mottled) = Revan
Hooded Lizard Tunic (dull yellow) = Sheldon
Hooded Lizard Bracers (bright blue) = Indigo

GM: Del Sannit & Bolo, Galen & Siofra, and Aust & Revan are all at the Tannery.
Sheldon & Indigo and Merindell & Torvald are on route to the Trades Store from the Blacksmith

Del Sannit was born to caravan life, trained and drilled in combat, how and when to fight against a hostile world. An Aedaman, he is average height with light skin, broad shoulders, straight back and strong legs. He keeps his dark brown hair cut to his shoulders and has grown a beard. He always has an amused gleam in his eye, as though he discovered some private joke about life.

Bolo was born to a Da'Roneh tribe, but forgets which one. She was orphaned after one of countless tribal conflicts and taken in by Sannit's family in the caravan. A Faethrin, she is a head shorter than Sannit, has dark bronze skin, voluptuous curves, and curly black hair that she keeps pulled forward over her face to hide a jagged scar on her left cheek. She is a skilled marksman with a bow, but also trains with her pair of long knives. She is quiet and reserved and often looks around as though expecting to find some hidden threat. She follows Sannit closely, so much that the other caravaners called the pair 'San-Bolo' for short.

San-Bolo shiver a little as the world settles around them. "That was a strange feeling," Sannit murmurs to himself while Bolo looks around with a puzzled expression. "Oh well, back to business. So we've agreed on the work, but not payment." He flashes the amber and jade again. "These would be mighty fine as beads or other décor added to your work. We took them from a vicious band of bandits that attacked us on the road here. Care to trade?"

After payment is settled Sannit settles into a friendlier demeanor. "This is a pleasant place here, Raven. I've heard of a not so pleasant place you might know of called the Hollow of Bones?" He motions to the rest of the group. "We are a band of intrepid adventurers and are thinking of investigating some of the strange places around here."

Aust Thale

Adventurer
OOC: Revan would like the mottled armored surcoat.

Aust was slow to leave the caravans, more evenly suited to life among them. Revan was very eager to leave, as she found life in the caravans less appealing. However, the reality of adventuring among strangers, even friendly strangers, finds the two of them switching roles. Revan is nervous about adventuring, and Aust is exhilarated by it. It places obvious strain on their relationship.

OOC: Mac, I will send you detail later on what to do with XP on the characters. I'll need you to tell me will it work or not. Thanks!

GM: Anything can be increased except core abilities. Use PM or Email.

Raven looks over the stones.

"Yes, the amber is a common means of currency here at Southroad Fair. They are valued at 10 clams each. The agate and jade are worth 20 each. That gives you a total of 250 in stones. The remaining 100 clams can be paid upon completion of the tasks. I accept the terms."

OOC: Party Equipment:
-6 agates
-6 jades
-3 ambers

After payment is settled Sannit settles into a friendlier demeanor. "This is a pleasant place here, Raven. I've heard of a not so pleasant place you might know of called the Hollow of Bones?" He motions to the rest of the group. "We are a band of intrepid adventurers and are thinking of investigating some of the strange places around here."

"Ha! That rumor still floats about. The truth of the matter is a bit mundane. The standing dead are not trees but the remaining stalks of the bloom of a cactus. The cactus is similar to agave, but is mostly subterranean and puts up a bloom stalk only once during the rainy season. The cactus prevents the growth of other plants near it."

"These hollows are more common further south in the drier sands. There is a real danger, though. The bloom comes out at night and smells like rotting meat. It attracts carnivorous animals to it, mostly jackals. The seed pods are like large darts that are fired from the stalk into the attracted animals. They are toxic. Most animals die where they stand to fertilize the ground around the cactus. The ones that run off spread the cactus to new areas. when the cactus is not in bloom, it can be rooted out and destroyed."

"The second danger is that these hollows are used as sacrificial areas by the more superstitious indigenous clans. The most superstitious are, of course, the cannibals and head hunters. So be wary if you go to investigate as this particular hollow sounds to be an active site
.

Tellerian Hawke

Defender of Oerth
Merin is deep in thought, as the little group hurries along.

~Hmm... I wonder if I could manipulate way in such as manner as to cause arrows and spears to miss me, and be deflected away? If we're going to face those pale-skinned savages, we'd better be prepared to repel missile attacks.~

GM: You already are. The collegiate skill that is added into your defend against projectiles score takes that into consideration. You are just not very good at it yet.

Tor is munching on a small baguette from his pouch as he walks along.

"So, Sheldon, which rumor sounds the most enticing to you? I'd really like to see this haunted tree for myself."
