I thought allowing thievery as one of the skills and mentioning 'figuring it out' was a nod to the rogues of D&D history.... and intimidate I think fits well and as a standard fighter tool.

Heh, yeah, it is pretty much like "use magic item", which in turn definitely goes back to OD&D. The thief was the original 'Jack of All Trades'.

I am not a massively 'traditional' type but I like to choose and adopt the traditions i like.

I always thought it was good. I think it may have been partially an interpretation of Grey Mouser, who has 'failed wizard apprentice' in his background. He's often found to be trying to attempt various magical things that are a little beyond his actual ken.
