Do you watch TV shows and movies to get ideas for your campaign world?

The paperback series End World, Deathlands and Outlanders always had some mutated or pre-apocalypse monstrosity that the main characters had to fight/kill while trying to survive another day.

I don't usually watch (or listen to) something for the specific reason of doing campaign research, though I've travelled to some real-world places for exactly this reason. That said, elements of the following have appeared (or are waiting to appear) in my current campaign:

- Xena/Hercules (much of the setting is based on these shows)
- Lord of the Rings (books/movies, for the general feel)
- Game of Thrones (for the grittiness)
- Harry Potter (for some magical elements e.g. horcruxes, memory travel, etc.)
- Star Wars, particularly Phantom Menace if you can believe it! (Palpatine/Sidious - best villain ever!)
- Pirates of the Caribbean (if I can only ever get my PCs to go to sea...)
- various books and-or series (for many things)
- various metal songs (for adventure ideas)

I mean, you could have that, but why not have the orcs working for the evil uncle of the king who wants to overthrow him?

Any way, that's just my idea.

I haven't read the entire thread, so someone might have ninja'd me already but you might want to check out Gaz 1 The Grand Duchy of Karameikos (specifically Baron Ludwig Von Hendriks)
