How would you build a varied version of the blacksmith?
I was thinking of a blacksmith that can make pseudo-magical items myself.
What sort of prestige class could be made based upon this concept?

I would use a feat, and it's possible there's already a feat for this. There's already precedent for having a magical weapon that grows with a fighter, despite the fighter not having any magic. The trope seems to come up pretty often in D&D novels, too.

If such a feat doesn't exist, I think I would make the skill rank prerequisite high. High-level experts are rare, and experts who can make magical items are rare, so this is a good way of ensuring these experts are ... rare.

One of my pet peeves with 3e is the "prestige class for everything" concept. Why a prestige class? And does it really make sense for an NPC expert to gain access to any prestige class?
