A Title Much Cooler Than Anything on the Old Site
This is one reason I'm not a fan of AL. No way to legally and honestly jump in at higher levels.

But to answer your question, it would be best to have some story to explain your presence. Perhaps the DM could work you in as the subject of an escort mission, to give the players an incentive for protecting you. Or, going the otherway, you are a retainer who somehow gets dragged into dangerous situation above your pay grade. I think you'd do better with a supporting character class like bard or cleric, where at least you can contribute with buffs and minor healing. You just wont survive melee combat at this level, so you'll likely be bored or at least feel impotent playing a martial archetype. Rogue is fine, as it will help you hide, but how will you actively contribute. Hopefully the DC levels on traps and locks are not set too high. Also, if there is another rogue in the party but one that is 8th level, you'll likely just be the backup or apprentice to them.

Being a Faction Agent background gives such a player possibly an easy way to survive as a low-level character: simply “team up” with another higher-level character of the same faction as a sort of adventuring intern, being shepherded along the way of serving the faction in the field by his/her more-advanced peer as a sort of goblin-stomping work-study! The higher-level character takes the lower-level character under his/her wing to protect an ally and the lower-level character begins practicing his/her abilities helping out the higher-level character as a sort of PC cohort for a level or two, all the while both getting in some good faction RPing.

I'm creating a wilderness guide -type character for Tomb of Annihilation. Of course he's a Chult native, but the Faction Leadership might notice that he is near by their Hero of the Sword Coast and instruct both to find each other, instead of trusting those Zhent-bought fellows...
As long as you aren't stepping on a Ranger's toes, the group would be better off with you in it - presently replacing the stock guides provided in the adventure. (Of course, you still don't know where anything is...)
