Best Non-RPG Gaming Sources of Minis/Terrain

For those of you with minis (D&D Miniatures, etc...) and terrain (Dwarven Forge, etc...), what are some great non-RPG gaming solutions you use as part of your D&D games?

For example, https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0767FTC8L?ref_=pfb_151n0kdkbb6m4fb2nklcifm630k6&tag=hydfbook0e-20&ascsu is from the Safari Ltd line. I've purchased some of their figures to use for a Giant Ape, an Elder Evil, a Giant Space Hamster, etc... They're not inended for D&D, but I am getting a lot of use out of their gorilla as my giant ape (huge size) for polymorph purposes, certainly.

I'm particularly interested in finding options for where there either are no minis in any line to fill a hole, or the minis are only available in the secondary market for a huge cost.

For trees and such we have used model railroad scenery. Also some of the model buildings are medieval in appearance and can be used to make village maps.

It's no secret I like playmobil figures for this purpose: http://www.enworld.org/forum/showthread.php?498212-Another-way-to-do-minis They are cheap and plentiful, never mind greatly customizable. The only problem is they are in their own unique scale. Other people prefer Lego minifigs -but I fund them hard to get and expensive, as there's no pure fantasy theme currently going on-. Other sources in the proper scale are plastic dinosaurs and Pokemon figures. In my country small silicone figurines are plenty and cheap, and they come in lots of shapes and forms so there's that too.

Definitely railroad stuff. I think HO scale works for things like trees (I'm not a railroad guy so double-check). Woodland Scenics has some cool options depending on how DIY you are.

I've also had really good luck at Michaels. They sell a ton of fairly cheap plastic foliage that you can cut up. Again, a little DIY ability can go a long way and you make some really cool greenery. And never buy anything at full price there either. They always have 50% off coupons floating around.

Also, check out the Dwarven Forge Facebook group. It's very active and people build some amazing stuff. I've gotten a TON of ideas from there.

Do you know of some good playsets? Everything I can find is all modern stuff, star wars, weird ninjas and cyberpunk dragons, but not any fantasy set. I know the pieces exist, thanks to Lego digital designer, but as far as I know all of it is out of print and quite expensive.

We have a few of the Heroclix figures with the numbered base that have been converted to D&D use. They seem cheap at the local store to get in bulk and operate on. A bit of paint and they are good.

Hmm, I've got a bunch of Castle stuff. Browsing the lego.com site I don't see those available anymore :( Searching for specific ones it shows them as retired :((

I do see;
- Nexo Knights; but they look a little punk to me. https://www.lego.com/en-us/themes/nexoknights/characters
- Elves; a but bright for my tastes, appear geared toward girls but see what you think. https://www.lego.com/en-us/themes/elves/characters
- Pirates; but it looks like most of those are no longer in production. https://www.lego.com/en-us/products/themes/pirates-of-the-caribbean

Buying them individually, or buying a set just for the figs has got to be expensive! Maybe you can find some collections on ebay that might be worth it.

I did see this, 20 figures from Ninjago for $4, but it's sold out :( https://shop.lego.com/en-US/THE-LEGO-NINJAGO-MOVIE-71019

Playmobil is similar I think, and you might find better deals there. Don't know.
