Gaming Style Percentages

This is just intended as a way to start conversation and to get your opinions on what you would consider different styles of games based on the division of how much time is spent in what activity.

For example, I'm finding that some people consider my style of game to be a hack n slash that is basically a boardgame, when I considered it a fairly typical RPG.

In no way am I suggesting anyone is having bad/wrong/fun. Just curious how you would split the categories.

My typical game (some call this a hack n slash)
50% combat
25% exploration
25% roleplaying

Storytelling
50% roleplaying
25% combat
25% exploration

Hexcrawl
50% exploration
25% roleplaying
25% combat

I'm probably a "Storyteller", if you average my games out.

I definately have sessions and adventures that are more Hexcrawl or Hack n Slash, but on average I'm probably:

50% Roleplaying
30% Exploration
20% Combat

Maybe. Sometimes exploration does take a back seat, and of course some adventures just don't have that much roleplaying and it's a fast paced series of combats and skill challenges, but usually we have 1 or 2 fights a session, at most, and it's a fight between roleplaying and exploration, which for us are barely distinct categories.

Hiya!

With regards to 5e D&D, I think we are pretty much:

30% Roleplaying
35% Exploration
35% Combat

A pretty good mix, where some sessions are more of one, but others are more of the next...and over the course of a few months or years, it likely turns out like above.

In regards to other "D&D" games I run every now and then...

BECMI
25% Roleplaying
40% Exploration
35% Combat

1e AD&D (Homebrew world of Eisla; VERY low-level/power)
40% Roleplaying
30% Exploration
30% Combat

Hackmaster 4th Edition
40% Roleplaying
20% Exploration
40% Combat

...and just to spice things up...

DCC RPG
90% Dieing
10% 0-level Character Roll Up

;)

Your math is a little off, ccs, but this is funny and accurate. It also introduces a meta issue that had me considering other mixtures, like:

Role-playing vs. dice-rolling vs. book-referencing vs. character-sheeting.

Also, I would hope that role-playing is happening during exploration and combat, so I would label my preferred game-play like this:

33% Socializing
43% Exploration (or non-socializing)
24% Combat (or anti-socializing)

That's pretty close to our group, except I'd swap the percentages of 'getting ready to play' and 'unrelated anecdotes'.
These days, we only manage to meet every other month, at best, so there's always a lot of unrelated stuff to chat about.
