Another way to preserve balance and randomness is to take the Standard Array and just roll randomly to determine which ability score gets which score.

In-order: Str, Dex, Con, Int, Wis, Cha
Roll 1d6 (re-roll if you come up with a number you've rolled before)
1: 8
2: 10
3: 12
5: 14
6: 15

What if I roll a 4?

Should be a 13 - missed in my pass-through.

You could also do this coming at it from the other angle: In-order, for 15, 14, 13, 12, 10, and 8, roll 1d6 and assign it to the following ability scores:
1: Str
2: Dex
3: Con
4: Int
5: Wis
6: Cha

Same basic mechanic, slightly reversed order.
