What Should My Next 4e Project Be? (Round 1)

jaldaen

First Post
So I've been pondering what my next 4e project should be and I wanted to see what ENWorlders would like to see for 4e. My first project, the Auxiliary martial controller class is now in playtesting and I'm still waiting on the next GSL FAQ before starting another project... which of course means I've got a bit of free time and I'm looking to fill it up with a 4e project.

So here's the rules:

Round 1 (lasts until midnight Monday July 28th):

1) From now until midnight on Monday July 28th you can propose up to 5 projects for consideration.
2) The 4e project needs to conform with the GSL and SRD's restrictions. So it should focus on "add-on" fluff or rules and not redefining 4e References. It could be an adventure, a rule's supplement (something you'd like to see added to 4e that's not there now), a fantasy location (i.e. a points-of-light backdrop for a campaign), or something else that you'd like to see that fits the fantasy genre.
3) It should fit within 10,000 to 20,000 words range (12 to 24 pages of text). I might end up longer if someone comes up with a really interesting idea and/or I get carried away with one of the ideas ;)

Round 2 (From Monday July 28 to Friday August 1):

1) I will compile a list of the top 5 to 10 proposals based off of people's responses here (and what I am interested in).
2) Everyone votes for a 4e projects they'd like to see designed by me.
3) The voting will go until Friday, August 1. At that time I'll tally up the votes and pick one of the top three vote getters as my next 4e project and keep the other ones in mind for future reference.

For those who are unfamiliar with my work you can check out my sig for more details.

Thanks in advance to everyone at ENWorld who participates in this thread. I've been a member here for a long time and I figured this might be a cool way to involve you in my design work. I look forward to seeing what you all come up with for me ;)

Proposals So Far (in Alphabetical Order):

1) Adventurer's Almanac Book (Points of Light): Using the 4e assumed campaign setting create a year's worth of adventuring seeds along with useful advice, topics of interest, a calendar of social, political, and astronomical events, holidays, a who's who, and perhaps some fake advertisements (including new equipment, alchemical material, etc.)

2) Fantasy Backdrop Book: Design generic and unique adventure locations for use in any campaign (rope bridges, volcanic cavern, etc.).

3) MacGuffin Item Book: Design a MacGuffin (a plot device that motivates the characters or advances the story, but the details of which are of little or no importance otherwise) device or object which could lead a party of adventurers through a series of quests (Example: The Book of secrets mentioned in post #7.).

4) Magic Item Book: Create new magical items for use with the 4e rules.

5) Mini-Setting “Points of Light” Book: Design a mini-setting that takes the core assumptions of 4e, asks “what if this was real?” and then uses the answers to construct a narrative for the world that fits with 4e’s concepts (power sources, healing surges, encounter/daily powers, etc.).

6) Monster Design Book: Design new monsters for use with the 4e rules including crunchy statblocks and fluffy back stories (book of new aberrant, elemental, fey, etc. creatures).

7) Monster Fluff Book: Flesh out the stories and ideas of some of the monsters in the Monster Manual (Where do cyclopses, grimlocks, salamanders, etc fit into the “points of light setting” and what’s their back story).

8) Detailed Organization Book: Design a cult or organization, which covers a wide expanse of levels, from the lowly ranks straight up to the leader(s). It would be chock full with new monsters, rituals, and magic items used by them as well. Lastly, the fluff would revolve around the organization and what their plans, intentions and origins are.

9) Ritual Book: Convert old and create new rituals for use with the 4e rules.

10) Tier-Crossing Adventure Book: Design a tier-crossing adventure with adventure sites, plots, etc. with the fluff of PCs discovering a way to reach a new tier of power.

11) Traps and Hazards Book: Design interesting and devious traps and hazards for 4e games (puzzles, word games, plain of fashion death traps, etc.).

So... how does this work? Do we propose 3 things? Do we wait for other people to propose things and then we vote ont hem? Do you propose things for us to vote on?

Do we propose 3 things?

You can propose as many ideas as you like (within reason, try not to go beyond 5), but by Monday you must clearly state with 3 proposals in the thread you are voting for.

I might extend the deadline to next Friday to allow for a whole week of proposals and voting, but that'll depend on how many people post to the thread.

Do we wait for other people to propose things and then we vote ont hem?

I'd suggest waiting for at least a half dozen proposals before people start voting. If we don't have enough by the weekend then I'll extend the deadline by a few days and see what happens.

Do you propose things for us to vote on?

If not enough proposals come in by the week end then I'll start making a few proposals, but I wanted to see what other ENWorlders wanted to see in the way of 4e material first before tossing out my own ideas.

If you have any other questions, then feel free to post them... this is the first time I've done something like this and so I'm sure there'll be a few things that need clarifying.

Thanks for your questions ;)

End Note: Alternately, I could just take proposals until Monday and then have the voting start on Tuesday and go till Friday of next week. I'm flexible, though I'd like to get this project started sooner than later ;)

That would be my suggestion. But hey. :)

Okay, I'll start making some suggestions:

Monster Fluff. You worked on the Monsternomicon, so you're pretty decent at fluff! There are many monsters in the 4e MM that are in need of some fleshing out! Or potentially some re-invigoration with new fluff.

Monster and Template Conversion/Design. Keterys and The_Jester are doing a good job of making or converting monsters, but it never hurts to have more! Whether you do Conversion or Design is up to you, a little of both couldn't be bad.

Grimtooth Reborn We are sorely lacking in traps. Some more would be great, especially wicked ones.

Exciting Encounter Sites Instead of actually making monsters, I propose you create places of interest, that a DM can take and put whatever he wants inside it. For instance, design the rules for fighting inside a volcano - the hazardous terrain of the poisonous gasses, the ambient heat, the ash, and so on. Want to battle on a rope bridge in the middle of a thunderstorm? Design that area!

So I've been pondering what my next 4e project should be and I wanted to see what ENWorlders would like to see for 4e.

Okay, here's one idea -- a mini-setting/backdrop that is specifically designed with the 4E rules in mind, in the same way that Eberron was designed for 3E. By this I mean a setting that has some kind of narrative rationale for 4E concepts like power sources, healing surges, encounter/daily powers.

Okay, I've got an idea you might want to develop.

The Book of Secrets

A book is found in a treasure trove. The book is intriguing by its design but all pages but one are empty. The very first page consists the instructions for a ritual. The ritual's purpose is to reveal the contents of page two. Page two is a treasure map of sorts. The tresure map leads to a gem that can be inlaid on the cover of the book. Once the gem is fitted page three is revealed.

And so on.

The Book of Secrets leads the characters through a series of quests. Each quests is pretty open ended but in order to learn the secrets within each page must be revealed in order.

The book can contain skill challenges, rituals, quests, and monster knowledge. It can take the characters through any environment be that dungeons, planar travel, banquets, voyages, you name it.

The book is a great macguffin as it can be stolen, require to be brought to a person, it needs to be deciphered, it can contain or lead to treasure. And it fits with the Points of Light-setting to boot.

Do with it what you will. :)

I would very much like to see more Rituals. Plenty of spells from the older editions would fit very well as Rituals.

You could also make magic items (okay, that one is probably a bit boring).

The rest I want to see was already mentioned. I really like the idea of a mini-setting.

I just revised the rules thanks to Rechan's questions. If you have an more questions, comments, or suggestions, then please post them ;)

Btw... I really like the ideas I am seeing posted ;)
