PHB gods

This question applys to players and DMs. If your group uses only the gods listed in the PHB, has anyone in your group (especially players playing clerics) expressed disatisfaction with them? In other words, have they said they want more gods, better gods, different gods, more domain options (like those in the FRCS), etc...

Thanks.

My home-grown campaign world uses the PHB gods. My characters haven't ever expressed a desire for additional ones. They seem to have what they need.

But the nuances of religion aren't the focus of my world, so stock gods are enough for them.

Some of my players think there are too many Evil Deities with overlapping portfolios (Wee Jas with Vecna and Nerull for instance). They also dislike the presentation of the holy symbols (What in Pelor's name would Nerull's holy symbol look like around a cleric's neck? From what material would it be made?).

I think my players want a small pantheon with still enough choice, and the PHB (Greyhawk) deities approach that very closely.

My players hate the Fearun pantheon due to the enormous number of deities. I hate it because when I tell my players: "He is a cleric of X" They wouldn't know what his faith is about, and they won't remember when I tell them because there are umpteen other deities to remember.

My players have never expressed anything about gods o_O. My homebrew (which I'm in the process of revamping, see the thread I started titled "If this doesn't get you interested in my setting, nothing will") has 3 gods, with 3 different religeons worshipping them under different names, plus some cults and The Way (as taught by monks). And there are even atheists on my world, despite the power of priests.

You know...

Well, if lack of dieties is a problem, and you are playing in Grayhawk, you could always pick up the Living Grayhawk Gazzeteer, which has all the gods in Grayhawk. There are maybe... 2 or 3 times the amount of gods or so than are listed in the PHB.

I will give you my opinion... the PHB gods are not enough for me... they lack variety and many are race based. So Moradin would fit a human very well and so forth.

Someone did say that the amount of gods in the Forgotten Realms is pretty absurd and I agree they overdid it. Pick and choose from their list. Create gods yourself... not very hard... all you have is determine domains and details. Favorite weapon.

Many of the Forgotten Realms gods are from Nordic mythos that is fairly familiar to older gamers or those with some culture.

As a DM I try to make each region have different gods. Of course some gods cross borders better than others.

IMC, I just took FR, looked until i found 10 main gods i wanted to focus on, and claimed that all the other ones lost their churches during the "Time of Troubles," when all the gods got avitars and fought each other. It may not be quite acurate to what the actual campain book says, but Hey! Im the DM, I OWN the place!

Pick up LGG ... more gods, more explanation. I find them just as useful as all the FR ones.

Personally like GreyHawk better, but the PHB is very very brief.

Overlapping? Well when you have 2 or more pantheons that end up that close to each other there is gonna be some overlap.

Think of all the War Gods in FR ... Anhur on one end Tempus on the other, similiar in GreyHawk.

I have the Living Greyhawk Book and it has almost as many deities as the FRCS. As a player I think I really get into worlds with 100 religions because I enjoy big things, epic adventures, maps that show continents 3000 miles wide, etc...

BUT. I'm in the middle of designing a home brew world and I'm trying to think about people new to the game who might find that many gods overwhelming. At the same time, I'm not quite sure that the PHB gods offer enough variety. What I've done is taken the PHB gods and added five more that seemed missing (a moon god, a god of knowledge, etc...)

Also, do all of you think of Wee Jas worshippers as evil? In the world I'm developing I've put the religion of Wee Jas in charge of looking over burial grounds and destroying undead (a la Kelemvor) and even detailed what her paladins are like. Does this go against the way her religion is usually depicted? (not that I mind being different).

Anyway, thanks for the posts and keep em coming...
