In-Game Justifications for Edition Conversions

So how much have you used in-game justifications for converting your game from one edition to the next? Did you just shine it? Did you play out the Avatar stuff? How well did it go? Do you just start over instead?

Tell me your experiences with this- I'm just curious. I usually have some kind of in-game thingy in my campaign- in fact, I think I had one for 2e, for 3e, and for 3.5! Hm...

Anyway, what about you?

You mean something like the Time of Troubles in FR?

Well, no. I sometimes change rules anyway, on a whim, when I think they need to be changed, so...

I ducked the issue entirely by starting over with a new campaign when 3E came out.
Not only are we changing campaigns, we're changing DMs. :)

Actually, the other DM was suffering from burn-out, anyway. We stopped our 8th or so characters and created 13th level characters to finish up RtToEE. I think the only reason we bothered with that is that I said I was going to wait for Unearthed Arcana and the alternate rules there before I started DMing, anyway. Pretty sure I'm going to use more than a few.

I say "changes in the magical flux" to justify all changes to the magic rules. Other rules stuff doesn't need worrying about IMO.

In the story hour for Wizardru's campaign you can read exactly what happened.
We killed off a mega powerful undead creature who had somehow set up a boobytrap that upon his death set off a chain reaction in the cosmos creating a huge amount of changes. Read the story hour for more and better info.

I think you'd need nothing less than a divine intervention to shapechange all 3.0 Rangers into 3.5 Rangers, a curse to afflict all multiclassed gnome Illusionists, the said abrupt change to magic/weave for all the spells and everything magical, the sudden popularity spread of tripping techniques more effective than before, and the current fashion of crafting equipment which has insidious shapes to hamper use from bigger or smaller creatures.

when changing from OD&D to 1edADnD. ( i'm still cheezed )

i had Gods or their helpers suddenly answering the clerics prayers.

i had the effects of spells change. but the character only learned this when he cast the spell in combat/during an event ;)

the fighter's weapons suddenly started doing more or less damage. and it changed based on the size of his opponent. and his ability to hit changed due to armor type.

the elf, the hobbit, and the dwarf found they had suddenly gained or lost abilities. of which i also allowed the player to multiclass his character if he Wished. although, it was a Limited Wish :o
