They got me!

BOZ

Creature Cataloguer
uhh...

i just found out today that the internet filters at work are now blocking the enworld forums server. :( fortunately, i quickly learned that the enworld.cybertstreet server is not yet blocked. however, it may be only a matter of time before they catch on to that. the bad news is, fellas, if that happens i'm kinda SOL on keeping the CC going. :( i could still do it, but it would be a hell of a lot harder. if this does occur, i'll let you know as soon as i can.

not to be nosey, but where do you work?

are there lots of employee's? ... and do you, um ... ya know geek, during official 'work' hours?

if it's just a few people, and you do your real work (here!) on your time AND you work for some cool people (lots of if scenarios in there eh?) ... maybe they'll unblock this one specific site?

I work in the office of an insurance company. There are hundreds, maybe thousands of employees in the building. My supervisors are not cool with it (but not overbearing about it), and although I try to be discreet, I’m sure just about everyone in my department has spotted me more than once. I don’t know if someone ratted me out, or if the IT department just noticed a whole bunch of (my) traffic coming here. My supervisors have warned me multiple times to curtail my extracurricular activities, which really only results in me trying to be more sneaky about it. ;) I try to do most of it on break/lunch/before and after work, but I often get bored and do it just to keep my mind awake. I’d have a hard time working here without my distractions! :D

i posted this on nutkinland earlier today:

Last week, my company’s internet filters finally decided that it was no longer cool to go to the enworld.org/forums server. That kinda sucked, but then I realized I could get past that using the enworld.cyberstreet server. Though all the icons and images that were strictly on the other server were inaccessible to me, everything was cool.

But now, with the new upgrades, I can no longer log in from cyberstreet! I can view all the ENworld pages I want, but I cannot post or use any of my mod functions on the Creature Catalog forums. Is there anyway around this? Will I lose sanity points from not being able to escape the tedium of work by spending a couple hours per day on ENworld? (of course, there is always here right where we are…)

The real problem I have is that I’m a pretty ineffective moderator for the CC forums if I can’t log in to them except for maybe a few hours out of the week when I’m at home in the evening.

Any ideas?

i downloaded the suggested software, and am using it to post now. this may be a temporary solution to a more long-lasting problem though. more info as it becomes available...

one bright side is that i can also access WotC and other "banned" websites while running this app. :) i'm using the free trial, but if this works well enough for me, i won't mind paying for a full version.

Man, that really bites. If the proxy browser doesn't work, you could sign up for dialup access (assuming you have a modem) and connect via that. I haven't looked in awhile, but there used to be free dialup services that covered their costs via loading your browser with ads.

I'm not real familiar with how they are blocking your access, but perhaps if you access EnWorld via its IP address (65.127.163.19) rather than it's domain name you could get in.

Failing everything else, we could always move the conversion threads to another message board, like Necromancer Games or Nutkinland. Of course, that doesn't help you with being a moderator of these boards.

sorry, no can do.

do you think that might work where the cyberstreet url wouldn't?

i have thought about that, and considered both of those places. that would be my last option.
