The gods didn't go epic!

i think they need to rerelease the deities and demigods book because its just hard to accept the fact that kord only has a +5 weapon and that none of them have more than 20 levels in anything...does anybody have anything to say about this?

The theory at the time was that any sourcebook should not be dependent on any books other than the PHB, DMG, and MM. So you didn't need to buy the Epic-Level Handbook to use your Deities and Demigods.

Which has its pros and cons.

well i guess the deities and demigods book just gives you a rough idea of how powerful a god is...

Personally I use what was listed for the gods as being for their avatars, the gods themself were 4 or 5 times more powerful(what ever the modifier for their avatars was).

I like to think that one of the major implications of the rule-of-thumb "if you stat it, your players will kill it" is "if you stat it, you mean for your players to kill it".

IOW - if you're using a god as a fount of unlimited power (aka - a plot device) , he doesn't need stats.

If, on the other hand, you're using a god as an NPC in your campaign, and you stat him, then that means the PC's should, at some point, have stats which could potentially rival him.

Yep, one of the first axioms of roleplaying - if it has stats, players will find a way to kill it.

Personally, when I run I do my gods as personifications of a concept or scope of things.. like the sun, or love, or war. As such, they're unkillable - they don't have stats, or need them. You can't kill the Sun god any more than you can put out the sun. Even if by some odd circumstance, you did kill the sun god, hey look the sun is still around *boop* and there's the sun god, right back as he was before. Want to kill the sun god? Extinguish the sun. Want to kill the god of war? Stop all conflict, everywhere.

2 things to consider:

1) Greater Dieties always maximize their rolls. You still have to roll to determine whether they critted or not, but essentially, they always hit. They always max their damage rolls, whether for attacks or spells. This is a serious crimp in diecidal plots.

2) Second, "Most dieties are 20 HD outsiders with 30 to 50 character levels as well. These additional charsacter levels beyond an effective character level of 20th follow special rules covered in more detail in the Epic Level Handbook." (Dieties and Demigods p26.) That they didn't spell it out doesn't matter.

I'd like to keep the different books usable for anyone.

Epic Rules is still an optional set of rules that is not and should not be required for the game. Books like deities and demigods should be usable by people without the purchase of yet another book, i.e. the Epic Handbook.

Well I just want to know why Kord isn't level 40 fighter insted he is level 20 fighter and level 20 barbarian...my point was why do none of the gods not have more than 20 levels in a single class, and i don't recall seeing any epic feats...
