The bring back Birthright thread!

Ok who else loved this setting, I have all the books and I was waiting each month for a new won until it was given the Axe. This too me was the best setting ever, Its exactly what I liked with one exception, Yes the war cards were very stupid and it needed a better mass combat system. But the game world itself was great, evil human hunting elves, the gorgon and his army. There is a online project but the makers never did say why it was axed. I heard there was not enough sales, hmm everyone I know was a fanatic about the game world.
Several great settings were given the axe, Id just like to know is if there is anyone else who really enjoyed this setting?

I really like the concepts. I didn't discover it until 3.0 was almost released (before 3.0 I didn't really touch D&D since mid-80's). I'd really like to run a campaign there, but won't go back to 2nd edition.

Unfortunately, none of the 3rd edition updates catch my imagination. I also don't have the time or energy to go redesign it into something I could handle.

My impression is that it was a casualty of TSR's implosion after having too many campaign settings and not a big enough audience to support them all.

Birthright was the only campaign TSR put out that I actively hunted down and purchased every release for. I love the concepts, the feel, and the world... this could've been TSR's Eberron if they'd've supported it better.

Unfortunately, any of the updates to 3.x haven't really done if for me. I still use the "domains" rules to rough out countries and provinces in my current campaign world.

Yep I liked Birthright too, but it did seem to get lost in the shuffle. The war cards did suck.

But it just seems that Bithright looses something in conversion. Cant put my finger on it. Dunno.

oh well

I think a conversion done by WOTC would be great but it would have to be done right so that the monsters, Ex. the gorgon needs to be almost invunerable and scary to go up against not something for the party to hunt down. I played a birthright campaign where the new DM wanted us to go into the Mtns and hunt down the gorgon for one of the local kings. A couple of the players have read all of the novels and knew the campaign world very well. we were like "hell no, are characters are brave but not stupid"! Sure well go with about 2,000 armored foot soldiers.
TO me it just seems that a lot of the new campaign worlds just dont have the same cool feeling to the world like BR did. Oh well I still have my books at least.

The official Birthright fansite has, quietly and without fanfare, released a working playtest document for Birthright 3E, and it is, quite frankly, fantastic.

You can download it by going to this page: http://www.birthright.net/aboutbr.php and holding your cursor over the "Downloads" button without clicking. This brings up a sub-menu. The third choice, "BRCS D20 Playtest" will be the third selection. Click it to start downloading the ZIP of the PDF file.

Unless it's been updated since I last downloaded it, the document is 187 pages long, and in 3E (as opposed to 3.5E) format. It is a great source, with my only complaint being that, in its bibliography, it lists the Birthright sources from Dragon and Dungeon as being unofficial, which is obviously wrong.

Ill check it out but its just not the same, shame on you WOTC for killing off a great campaign world!

Ampolitor,

I too like the concepts behind Birthright, but the amount of views and lack of responses is testament to WOTC's business decision in this case. Giving/licensing the world away to a third party for peanuts would be counter to their business of focusing the core game on their two campaign settings FR and Eberron.

Don't expect miracles on a sunday and in less then 12 hours. I think the problem lay with the focus on domain ruling and not on the adventuring, most groups play D&D for the adventuring. The domain ruling was very kewl, but it kind of left the DM with the problem on how to run his games, the published adventures weren't that great, the best effort imho was the Dungeon adventure that was mentioned. If BR were to ever make a comeback it should be more focused on adventuring in the world of Cerilia (which was pretty nifty) and less on the domain rules.

I was wondering (just a thought), would WotC be willing to sell the BR property (instead of liscencing the property)? And if so, what would something like that be worth? I don't have a clue what the value of something like that would be and am wondering if it would be worth to buy those rights or develop something 'new'.
