The Pedula

demiurge1138

Inventor of Super-Toast
The pedula, or "shaggy beast", is a dragon from European legend. So I statted it out, as there's a lack of dragons in D&D with real legendary roots.

Comments, etc, are always appreciated.

This massive draconic beast has a serpentine head and neck extending from an ovular body covered in thick, metallic quills. It stands on four short legs, each bearing a clawed paw. A fat tail, with a triangular flap of skin at the tip, drags behind it.

The pedula is a nearly elemental force of destruction, blighting everywhere it goes with fire and poison.

Pedulas are a rare offshoot of the draconic line, and it is believed they are not entirely natural in origin. Their dim sentience is only capable of reasoning out the most painful ways to kill an opponent and take their shiny objects, but they are most skilled in this area.

It is widely rumored in lands devastated by the pedulas that they can only be killed by striking their tail. This is untrue, but probably a safer proposition than trying to hack at the steel spines covering the creatures’ bodies.

Pedulas understand Draconic, but do not speak it. They average 40 feet long (although particularly old and vicious specimens may reach nearly double that) and weigh about 10 tons.

Combat
Pedulas live for combat, and tear into opponents with relish, not to mention teeth the size of daggers and claws like sickles. They prefer to use their breath weapon to set buildings alight to devour those that flee them, but do use it to “soften up” heavily armored opponents, as well as eliminate all but the toughest from a group of foes.

Breath Weapon (Su): Once every 1d4+1 rounds, a pedula can breathe a cone of fire 60ft long. All creature caught in the cone must make a Reflex save (DC 23 half) or take 15d6 points of fire damage. The save DC is Constitution based.

Frightful Presence (Ex): Whenever a pedula attacks, charges, or uses its breath weapon, all creatures within 60ft with 13 or less Hit Dice must make a Will save (DC 19) or be shaken for 5d4 rounds. Creatures that successfully save against the pedula’s frightful presence cannot be affected by the frightful presence of that pedula for 24 hours. The save DC is Charisma based.

Poison (Ex): The bite of a pedula carries a virulent venom that causes rapid tissue decay. Fortitude DC 25 negates, initial damage 1d6 Con, secondary damage 2d6 Con. The save DC is Constitution based.

Spiny Defense (Ex): Any creature trying to strike a pedula with a natural weapon or melee weapon must make a Reflex save (DC 16) or take 1d8+15 points of damage from the pedula’s spines. Weapons with exceptional reach, such as longspears, do not endanger their wielders in this way. The save DC is Dexterity based.

Looks good... but a few little comments:

Con of 24, so a +7 hp bonus/level => 13d12+91 hit points

Mulitattack => Multiattack (Argh! Not the deadly mullet... :) )

Don't dragons have all good saves? I get Fort (13/2)+2+7= +15; Ref (13/2)+2= +8; Will (13/2)+2+2= +10

I guess the spiny defense only applies to melee attacks? Or does it fire spines at ranged attackers?

OK, the reason that saves, hp etc were a bit screwed up was because I wrote the pedula out, originally, in Costa Rica without benefit of books or calculator.

Also, it originally had 11 Hit Dice, but was changed to 13 in the middle of design.

Also, there aren't too many pics that I could find. Here's what I got, attached below.

Any Chance of Outlining the History
