What would be the Iconic DND monster/character/NPC/thing or the DND Mascot?

I started thinking about this while posting on another thread.

If you have seen of O'Reilly's (a techie publisher) books, the usually have some sort of animal/critter on the front.

I was wondering what type of monster/character/NPC could symbolize DND in all it's glory.

Or what would make a good mascot for WoTC to use.

Imagine at your FLGS, so poor guy dressed up in a mind flayer costume, trying to get people to buy the PHB.

The beholder, of course

A beholder would work, as you mentioned in the other thread. A dragon may be too generic, and anything else would be too obscure.

Dragon is too obvious... but, yeah, I'd go with the Beholder.

Now all we need is someone to draw a little "cute" picture of a beholder doing "cutesy" stuff.

Like a beholder in a baseball cap, with a balloon next to it, eating a hot dog at the baseball game.

Or a beholder father, "floating" his tiny beholder children to beholder school.

Or even better: in the next incarnation of DND, there should be a Beholder Guide, a little sidebar where the Beholder Guide explains in simple terms how to play DND to a newcomer. Similar to how MS Office has those animated helpers like the paperclip or dog.

Imagine a cutesy beholder illustration in your PHB with a little dialogue ballon saying: "Don't forget! Humans get +1 skill points per level!"

Brian Menze, a former Interplay artist, drew several cute "super deformed" iconic D&D monster pictures as avatars for the Black Isle message boards, including a beholder. Unfortunately, there is nothing left of Black Isle, Interplay, or their message boards. I'll try the web archive.

Actually I think WotC should bring out/licence a line of helium filled Beholder baloons and as a promotion gimmick include one free in each DMG
