The top change 3e made to the D&D spell system...

I can't express how significant that change has been.

The second best change is clerics spontaneously casting cure spells... it's only just behind the first. :)

Cheers!

No. The top change 3E made to the spell system was substituting "preparation" for "memorisation". With one stroke, all the usual gripes about how people can forget a spell were rendered obsolete.

Actually, IMC it is the spontaneous casting that had the greatest impact... That has really changed the way clerics are played.

My players (except for sorcerors) don't commonly, prepare lower lever spells in a higher level slot.

I must admit, however, that my players are not really into optmization mode. Sometimes, I have to point out some advantegeous spell combinations.

It's certainly made a difference in my experience, but not necessarily a good difference. True, more non-healing cleric spells get prepared/memorized, but fewer non-healing cleric spells actually get cast.
