Bad Axe Games is pleased to announce that the first of several GRIM TALES PDF products are now available at RPGnow.

Please note, GRIM TALES is not required to use any of these products. In keeping with the design philosophy of the ENnie Award Winning GRIM TALES, each pdf product is designed to work with your existing collection of d20 materials.

HORROR
Integrate rules for Horror and Insanity easily into your game. No need for additional attributes, no "sanity" score to track, no changes necessary to your existing monster statblocks. Players make a Horror Check against a Horror Threshold determined by the creature's type (undead, aberration, etc.), with effects ranging from dazed, to panicked, to short and long-term insanities. Full d20 mechanics are provided for a range of real-world psychological disorders.

MASS COMBAT
Simple but powerful, this Mass Combat system includes a spreadsheet to ease unit preparation.

GAMEMASTERING
The curtain is finally thrown back on the obscure process of determining Encounter Levels (EL) and designing balanced encounters, even groups with mixed CR. Some fans have commented that this single chapter was worth the entire purchase price of Grim Tales. Now that this material has been revised, clarified, and expanded-- not to mention priced at a mere $1.95-- every GM will want to view this groundbreaking design work. This product download includes a spreadsheet for tracking party EL, encounter EL, relative encounter difficulty, expected party survival rate, expected expenditure of party resources, and calculation of experience points.

CREATURE CREATION
The crown jewel in the GRIM TALES electronic offerings, this product download contains a spreadsheet that takes the work out of creature creation. Build your monster step-by-step, choosing Type, Hit Dice, Size, Attacks, and so on, and the spreadsheet will calculate the fair and accurate CR for your final creation. This amazing tool comes with the entirety of Chapter 13 in PDF format as a reference guide for the parameters of the design process.

Wow, great stuff.

Quick question: What is the output of the Creature Creation spreadsheet? Does it put it into a standard stat block?

Not yet, though we anticipated this question and hope to implement this feature.

Currently the spreadsheet is designed to simplify the process outlined in Chapter 13 and return the CR value.

Any thoughts to Slavelords as a pdf?

No time soon, it's a possibility but certainly not before the hardcover has had its run.

I printed fewer Slavelords than my typical print run; I'd love to sell it out in a hurry.

It's a beautiful book to hold]/i] and look at, though. PDF doesn't do it justice.

No character gen?

I'm definately picking up the creature creator, as I have a whole passel o' new creatures to stat up for a homebrew setting using Grim Tales.

I'm still still still hungering for a char-gen, though.

The Creature Creation form just made my day! Thanks a million.

I don't suppose you could convice UK into doing something for unique spells and magic items? ;)

Not unless a programmer steps up who can handle it.

I'm still still still hungering for a char-gen, though.

It's more work, apparently, than it seems.

I don't even understand the request. What is it exactly you're looking for-- and why would I be in a position to convince UK to do anything? (I wish I was...)

Well, creating unique creatures is incredibly easy with Creature Creation rules. It has helped me balance all my original monster creations.

I was under the impression that UpperKrust was the primary author.

I am asking as other creation rules I could really use are ones for unique spells and magic items (as common magic item rules like rings/rods are already strongly codified). For instance, spell rules in your HoHF Elves are helpful in making wondrous items that have no DMG counterpart. And I think both areas could be more detailed and automated, but I realize that the work would be considerable.

So, I'm really just laying my dreams out there.
