[3.5] Errata/FAQ not included? Confirm or deny.

First Post
Sean K. Reynolds types one little off-hand remark on his laptop while riding a train, and EN World bursts into flames. Seems that a butterfly flapping its little wings may be able to cause--eventually--a tornado on the other side of the globe after all.

Sean's remark:

I'd guess that's because the designers may have been working off the pre-errata files and didn't plug in all of the errata. Oops.

Has anyone sat down with a copy of the FAQ/errata and copies of 3.5 to see whether there's any truth to this?

I hope someone will...

I believe this is a bit of an oversight on Sean's part. The entire passage is this:

{Caster level is still a prerequisite for magic item creation. This was an error in the 3.0 DMG and remains.}

I'd guess that's because the designers may have been working off the pre-errata files and didn't plug in all of the errata. Oops.

But the truth is, this rule was never altered by Errata or even the Official D&D FAQ. Despite his previous belief that it should be.

Most of the revisions we've seen so far to item prices, rules clarifications, and the like would indicate that most of the errata/FAQ has been applied. I'm sure a few things will slip through the cracks, though.

My question is: how will WOTC handle 3.5 errata and questions? Will they start a new D&D FAQ from scratch?

For the record:

1. Monte never intended caster level to be a prereq for creating items.
2. His turnover of the DMG text doesn't include such a rule.
3. It was added afterward, I don't know when.
4. It's a pretty well-known bit of errata among the R&D staff, as Monte and I both talked about it with people when we both still worked there.
5. It apparently didn't make it into the official DMG errata, though it should have.
6. I thought it had made it into the errata, but was on the train home without a copy of the errata so I couldn't check, and since I left my power adapter at work I only had a limited amount of time to post my comments before I ran out of power so I couldn't check the errata to be sure.
7. The error is still in the 3.5 DMG.
8. I'll be posting a correction to my commentary ASAP.

So, uh, what? Why on earth is a caster level listed for every single item if it isn't a prerequisite? What else would it be there for? How did it accidentally sneak into every item description?

For the purposes of dispel magic, I would imagine. Very handy to have that information.

...and to determine the effects (i.e. damage, duration, range, etc) of most (but not all) magic items...

Wow...all the Heavy Hitters™ of EN World come out to play. Now all we need is a word from Monte@Home, Piratecat, and Gary Gygax...and then I can rest. Oh...Hong too I suppose.

Sean, thanks for the clarification. And by the way, I hope you didn't take the beginning of my post as an unflattering comparison--it was only meant to suggest that one little sentence can lead to furor in the gallery!

I'm still hoping someone who has the books will tell us whether the contents of the FAQ and Errata have been folded into the new text.

... and saves, for when your fireball catches the spare helm of brilliance in its area of effect.

Not at all. :)

I haven't done an examination of the books for that purpose, but AFAIK they did, the caster level thing is probably an exception because (for some reason) it never made it into the errata.
