New to the area: DC

First Post
Hi, everyone.

I've recently moved to DC and have been looking around for a gaming store or a gaming group. I've played Magic and LotR CCG's and several roleplaying formats. (D&D, AD&D, White Wolf, Rolemaster, GURPS, ...)

Does anyone have any advice on where I can go to meet the card- and game- players around DC? Right now I'm limited to using the Metro to get around, but I'm willing to hike or take a taxi to meet people.

Thanks for your time, everyone!

I know the Wizard's of the Coast retail stores in the area host the card games. I don't play those so I don't know if it what you are looking for or not.

i used to shop at Hobby Works in Laurel, MD

or GamesWorkShop in College Park...

but i'm guessing they both went belly up. that was back in the early 80's.

This will probably get moved to the Gamer's Seeking Gamers forum soon, just so you know.

Some of my players are moving soon, so I am fishing for new players. Unfortunately, I am about an hour south of the beltway, so not too metro accessible. :(

Anyways, I think your best bet for the time being is to join the DCRPG mailing list, which has frequent calls for players or games, info on local game stores, etc. (As I am a bit south of the beltway, I am not too well versed on what's close to the beltway, but one name I hear a lot is the Game Parlor in Chantilly. There is more discussion of local game stores in the DCRPG archives.)

You'll have to travel a bit, but the Game Parlor in Chantilly is very good. Sadly, it is far off the metro. You'll really need a car, a cab will be too expensive.

There's a sci-fi store in Georgetown, but they don't have table games and because its Georgetown the prices are a little high.

Anyway....

Welcome to the area!

Incidentally, they won't be able to help out with gaming, cards, or RPGs, but check out the Washington Post entertainment staff's weekly Q&A on Thrusdays: http://discuss.washingtonpost.com/wp-srv/zforum/03/r_entertainment_081403.htm They focus more on the bar/club/activity/arts scenes, but if you're new to the area you might want to know what's out there.

For RPGs your best bet might be to post some flyers around the local universities. I truly do not know of a FLGS in the city proper. Sorry man.

see if you can find the City Paper...one of those Freebies with off the wall indie type stuff in it. sometimes gamers post in the want ads.

The WotC store at Pentagon City couldn't be closer to a metro stop. You won't have to see the light of day to get to the store from the Pentagon City metro stop, and it's pretty centrally located on the Blue and Yellow lines.

I'm not sure when they play what games, but I think they have something every Wednesday night and Saturday during the day. You can also just look them up and call them to find out what and when. I know they used to host some D&D on Sundays, but it was always a nightmare as 20+ people would show and not much would get done. They don't have any lists of gaming groups there, but you can subscribe to the DCRPG list and send a message of what you are looking for.

#1 gaming store in DC area (also one of the best & oldest in the country)

In Rockville, MD. Not horribly far from the White Flint metro stop (apprx. 2 miles), but I wouldn't want to hike it in bad weather. :)

If you are into the CCG thing, they have regular meets for most card games (Yu Gi Oh, M:TG, LOTR, etc.) as well as a goodly selection of RPGs & minis. Check the website for directions and upcoming events.
