Underworld Vampires & Werewolves SPOILERS

KChagga

First Post
Well just saw Underworld and I enjoyed it. It wasn't everything I would have done with the premise, but I was entertained. Not sure why everyone hates this movie so. I thought it was pretty good.

Beware SPOILERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

On to the point of the post.
Who else thought the vampires were pathetic in this movie?
Let's break down the powers and abilities of both species as seen in the movie.

Vampires:
Powers:
Immortal,
Can jump off of really high objects and not get hurt,
Can cling to ceilings and walls,
Can sprout fangs
Weaknesses:
Sunlight,
Needs to drink blood

Werewolves:
Powers:
Immortal,
Can jump off of high objects and not get hurt.(as seen when Michael leaps out of the window to the street, landing on his feet),
Can cling to ceilings and walls(also seeming to run on them),
Can sprout fangs(and an enormous wolf body to boot),
Very fast,
Very strong,
Regeneration,
Weaknesses:
Silver

Is it just me or did the werewolves have every ability of the vampires plus more. The vamps seriously were weak compared to the superwerewolves in this movie. The only vamp to put a fight versus a werewolf was the elder and that was versus a regular werewolf.
Oh well. I still enjoyed the movie and will wait for the inevitable sequal. :D

I always thought werewolves were more powerful than vampires anyway. The only thing that gives vampires the edge is that they are smarter and can control their savagery.

Of course, I am a big werewolf fan so I have to take their side ;)

Way to many guns not enough powers and fighting. Both are supposed to be superfast and superstrong but it seems that all they did was shoot at each other. If they would of stopped with the matrix gunfight crap and used some of the matrix fistfight crap they could of really had something. The end fight between Michael and Viktor had some really good moments in it, shame they didn't have more of that going on.

Yes, the difference seemed to be intelligence/wisdom. When the lycans were in full Were-form, their tactics suddenly became sucky for the most part. No stealth, not finesse, no tactics...just everyone rush whoever you're most pissed at in that moment. Thus, they were often mowed down by guns, or the target vampire escaped because they were still thinking in a clear-headed manner.

I guess you could say that turning into a werewolf was akin to raging!

I think the other advantage Vampires have are numbers. Selene mentions that most people die from werewolf bites only a few live and become werewolves. Probably due to the dramatic changes in body chemistry and the shape of the skeleton. On the other hand Erika asks Selene if she intends to turn Michael like its a straight forward matter.

So it appears vampires can replenish their numbers easier.

Also notice vampires arn't undead in this film just immortal, they have a heart beat. Viktors heart starts beating on being awakened.

The fact werewolves are stronger than vampire reflects WW mythos as well where a lone werewolf can easily take out all but the most experienced vampires in a one on one fight, but vampires tend to win through organisation and numbers.

Vampires! Werewolves! Kate Beckinsale with super powers and black leather!

How on earth did they make this movie so boring? This is one of those movies that action film directors can point to as evidence that making a good action movie is an underappreciated art.

This is the second recent movie in which an actress I like got stuck playing a really bad vampire. Selene was a poor Trinity wannabe. I can forgive Kate Beckinsale; lots of great actors have one money-maker in their past that they'd rather forget (Julianne Moore in The Lost World). My ten dollars will have been well-spent if it means she never has to do this again.

It wasn't a good vampire movie; the vampires were just people who dressed in black whose eyes turned blue when they got angry.

It wasn't a good action movie, the director wouldn't let you see the action even if it was well done.

With few exceptions, the acting was AWFUL! Craven made me wince whenever he opened his melodramatic mouth, and half the audience actually laughed out loud every time Victor spoke.

Okay, okay, some good points:

If all you're interested in are the werewolves, you might like this movie, in the way that a starving man might think a pizza is ambosia. Lucian was kind of cool, and the werewolves were actually allowed to be werewolves, unlike the vampires.

Scott Speedman has no charisma, imo, but I thought he played a good "who the heck are you people?" kind of regular joe.

I think I mentioned Kate Beckinsale in black leather already. I guess that's it for the good points.

This thread is for spolier discussion.

There is another thread for reviews, located here:

Yours, if it had been posted to the right thread, would stand out as the first outright negative review by any EnWorlder who had seen it to this point. One other is neutral, and all the others are positive (and some of them raving in their positivity).

Actually there is at least one negative on up in the column (I think Krug hated it).

D'oh! All that ranting gone to waste. Oh, well.

To follow this thread... I didn't like the movie's version of vampires. As someone already pointed out, they weren't undead; not only did Victor's heart start beating, but his daughter was pregnant when he had her killed. And the general coolness of vampires was underutilized. Jumping off of buildings and clinging to ceilings added nothing to the story other than to say "look, we have super-powers, too!" They were just good-looking people with guns and expensive tastes.

The whole pathos of being a vampire or a werewolf was lost entirely. I thought the Selene-Michael relationship was going to go that direction - I was convinced that Michael was a "cure" to vampirism (and maybe lycanthropy, too) and that Lucian wanted to use him as a weapon (or salvation, or both - end the war by making all the immortals mortal again).

I've never played any White Wolf games, but it makes sense for werewolves to be more ferocious than vampires, if they were bred by the vampires to be a kind of warrior caste. After all, a vampire would want a bodyguard who could defeat another vampire.

Personally i thought the movie was pretty good, for an action film. What people seems to misunderstand is that action films are not made for winning oscars in best actor/ess, but just to entertain people.

With that said, i went into the movie without much of an expection, and i really did like the movie.

Now, onto the spoiler section.

Well, as people as explained, vampires have number on their side, plus better organization, plus they control lots of money and power. Also, the Viktor didn't just beat up a regular werewolf. In the beginning it is said that only the truly ancient werewolves can change form at will, and that black guy can defiantly change form at will.

Then, there is the fact that in the 21st century, who ever got the better technology wins. Claws and fangs are no match for explosives and guns. (Most of the time)

Yea, same here. :D Seeing as the movie only cost 27 million to make, they are bound to make enough to make a sequal.
