Pedro Mondragon Episode I

“My name is Pedro Mondragon. You killed my hatchfather. Prepare to die, gnome.”

Pedro grew up among a clutch of his fellows living a normal kobold existence torturing small animals, playing with little toy traps, and practicing mean tricks on his fellows and their servants. Like many of his camp, Pedro even learned the language of their captured woodland slaves. This idyllic home life was shattered by the coming of the gnomes. Illusions covered their sudden assault. There was much chaos and confusion as the band of hardy gnomes came into the lair, killing kobolds left and right and taking their stuff, weapons, treasure, and even freeing the slaves. Pedro managed to climb into a murder hole to hide and witnessed the whole scene of wanton slaughter and looting. When it was over he overheard the joyful laughing gnomes amid their jokes and celebration. One of them, a bard, composed a victory ballad on the spot, recounting each of the band’s heroic individual deeds of prowess. Pedro listened and committed the song to heart, each verse identifying another one of the slayers.

That song haunted young Pedro and he swore an oath of vengeance that day. He trained under the best kobold blade-masters learning the art of Krichucal, kobold fencing. Once he had learned the secret maneuvers for drawing opponents into opening their guards, Pedro left to scour the surface-lands by night attempting to find any signs of the infamous gnomes, the bard’s song endlessly playing inside his head. Unfortunately, despite a dynamic personality, Pedro has few skills for dealing with surface races and his hunt has been unsuccessful so far.

Tactics: Pedro issues challenges to face his opponents one on one (if he is surprised and outnumbered) and he relies heavily upon the feinting maneuvers of Krichucal to set up his opponents for devastating thrusts of his blade. In mass melees he will maneuver to set himself into flanking positions that allow him to take advantage of an opponent’s poor footwork.

Entry Part Deux

“Yes ma’am, Captain Mondragon at your service. Now if you will take the young prince into that side chamber and lock the door, I will hold them off until the Royal Guard arrive.” With a snapping salute of his sword to the princeling, Mondragon flowed into the warrior’s stance. Vitus flowed from his soul and the captain’s sword began to hum through the air as he prepared for the onrushing assassins.

Pedro Mondragon is a loyal and true man, willing to stand up for a just cause. He can be relied upon to hold the line in the face of overwhelming opposition. In combat he prefers to station himself in one spot and hold fast. He relies upon his impressive armor class to be a front line warrior drawing dangerous opponents to himself while his comrades are free to cast spells or maneuver into tactical positions.

Lord Pedro Mondragon, past Guild-master of the Adventurers Guild #42, Royal Explorer, member of the Hunters Guild #3, author, playwright, poet, lyricist, and master duelist.

The following is an excerpt taken from the autobiography: The life and Adventures of Lord Pedro Mondragon, and is included with the authors permission.
I was born to noble parents in the city of Greyhawk some 2 score years ago. My father was the noble merchant Lord Dwaedan Mondragon, who passed on when I was but 13 years old. It was at this time I took the daunting task of managing my fathers estates and caring for my mother, Lady Biwen Leralle Mondragon, passed when I was 15, due to the grief of losing my dear father. It was at this time that I realized my destiny, sold my family’s merchant company, yet retained my social station, and became the famed adventurer that I am today.

The following is taken from the book: Famous Heroes of Our time, by Treilin Pogard, past Guild-master of the Adventurers Guild #42.

One of the more outstanding adventurers is Lord Mondragon. This charismatic fellow was one of the original adventurers responsible for freeing the people of Geoff from their hardships. There are a few witnessed accounts of Pedro single handedly attacking a band of hill giants and felling them all without taking a serious injury. Were it not for this courageous hero, one would think that Geoff would still be in dire straights.

The following is an excerpt from The Adventurers Song, by the bard Wirid.

He kicked the doors with hero’s boots,
The thieves surprised and shaken.
Lopped off their heads with single stroke,
The bastards ran forsaken.
At this time the blackguard came.
His name was Fongle Strom.
The demon Orcus was his patron.
Yet Pedro stood fast strong.
The battle fierce and went into night,
Many blows were shared.
Pedro the True and Right
His victory was assured.

To be fair the following is an account by de Coremar Siaf in regards to Pedro.

“Pedro? The man is a bumbling fool I tell you. Sure he knows how to influence people, why else would so many people look up to him? But I know the truth. I adventured with the crazy loon early in his 'famous' career of exploits. We were cleaning out a haunted tomb, and the towns folk warned us of man-wolves lurking about. Pedro, in his wisdom, decided we should stock up in iron weapons, laying claim that cold iron was the sure thing to down a werewolf. I tried to explain to the man that he was wrong, and what we really needed was silver, but no. He starts breaking out in quotations of this and that, saying that some unknown, yet famous individual has stated time and again that cold iron is the way to go. He even had our henchmen convinced, if you can believe that?! So there we were, me being the sole individual with a weapon made of silver, and we get attacked by a werewolf. Pedro, grant him, stayed and fought, despite the fact that it was obvious that his weapon of cold iron was doing nothing. The henchmen ran as soon as they saw their weapons were failing. I killed it handedly. After our reward, I split ways with the fool, he was more trouble than good. Then, 3 months later, what do I find?! It was ME who suggested cold iron and HE’s the fool who killed the werewolf!! I could’ve killed him myself, but I figure, by letting him keep his lie, I never have to worry about seeing him in my presence again.”
(Authors note: no proof of Coremar’s statement has ever been forth coming, and the henchmen they hired side with Pedro.)

Roleplaying Notes: Pedro considers himself a genius and a world reknowned adventurer. The problem is that even though he knows enough about a lot of things to make him dangerous, his lack of common sense makes him truely a moron. However, his knack for convincing people of various things that are not true is such that, a number of people believe him when he refers to his various exploits. Pedro is also vary naive and probably doesn't completely comprehend what is or is not true about himself or anything for that matter. Despite his short comings, Pedro does have a lot of talent, and the possibility of becoming quite the explorer, so long as he doesn't make too many stupid suggestions.

I am, therefore I travel.

Pedro grew up with the knowledge of Fharlanghn, passed through his father, a cleric of the travelling deity. His father’s constant preaching of the Dweller of the horizon only fuelled his adventurous nature. This curious personality got Pedro into trouble more times then it was worth, but he persisted leading other into local woods, lakes and even cliffs, where if they wouldn’t follow he’d go on without them. His father soon reigned him in, and began to involve him in his church work.

As soon as he entered the choir Pedro discovered he had a natural talent for singing, and his father’s face lit up when he thought he had killed two birds with one stone. However Pedro’s thirst for adventure was not quenched and he continued his pursuit for the Road. Into his 10th year at the monastery he still attempted to escape once in a while, and after sadly hearing of his sons escapades set him aside and spoke to him, But before he could say a word Pedro spoke to him “I am therefore I travel.” His father immediately realised the mistake of trying to keep a follower of Fharlanghn locked up.

Pedro soon began to pack, it wasn’t much for adventuring but he was astounded what the church found from the last monk come adventurers spoil, and all the local mage could muster. Thanking his friends and father for the help he set off to preach Fharlanghn’s word and travel the gods roads.

Background
Pedro Mondragon is a young man with a temper, who has only just found his calling. Twenty years ago, he was born second son to the Duke Mondragon. The life of a noble didn’t agree too well with the free-natured boy, and the fact that his parents had little attention for him didn’t help. As an early adolescent, he hid himself into a passing caravan that took him away from his family’s lands. Dropping his last name, he got by on his cunning and big mouth, eventually making it into the big city where he could finally live the life he wanted for himself. He spent those years gambling and drinking, honing his way with words and the sword, and learning the craft of weaponsmithing. As the years went by, his life grew stale on him and he signed up as a sailor on a ship set out for foreign lands. His journeys eventually found him in a land beset by trouble. The people there were in war with the drow from underground.
The noble blood running in Pedro’s veins finally stirred, urging him to take up the fight and help the people. He has taken additional combat training and has taken to the reverence of the sun god, his greatest aid in combating the underground elves.

Personality
Pedro has grown quite fanatic in his battle against the drow, and he has adopted the ways of his new people as his own. He cares for those he works with, and uses his noble bearing and way with words to give hope and leadership where he can. Nevertheless, he is still every bit the rogue. He prefers quick, directed strikes at his enemy and never seems to run out of sharp comments.

Description:
Pedro is a dark skinned, dark haired southerner with intense eyes and deadly aim. He is of average build and weight, and is very young for his level of skill, only 20 years old. He tends to not think things through and gets himself into frantic shoot-outs because of it, but he has a basically good heart and can rarely let an innocent come to harm.

Background:
Pedro was born in the south lands, the son of a long line of bowyers & fletchers. He was cuddling a crossbow before he could walk, and wielding one shortly thereafter. Pedro took to the crossbow like a fish to water, and has never looked back.

When Pedro came of age, his father Hector gave him a gold-gilded, gem-encrusted scroll case. Within the scroll case rested an ancient map, of a location lost to antiquity, the location of a legendary crossbow made by a distant relative, the Crossbow of Santo.

Pedro set off immediately to try to find the Crossbow of Santo, and has done naught but search ever since. His searches have taken him from one end of the continent to the other, but to no avail thus far. During his quest, Pedro has been and adventurer, a mercenary and a teacher of crossbowmanship. Recently he has set up a bow-making shop, as he had become frustrated with his quest and had given up.

A vision set Pedro straight, a visitation by the spirit of his relative, Santo, which led him out into the world once more in search of the crossbow.

Pedro “The Crossbowman” Mondragon’s quest for the Crossbow of Santo continues…

I got bored so I drew a quick sketch of "The Crossbowman"

All dwarves know how to hide from giants. Giants should learn to hide from Pedro.

--

Pedro skated briskly along the ravine's sandy bottom. He had found his quarry at last - the noise of the ogre's slurping dwarven meal was easily audible in this confined chasm.

He could hear its pounding feet and rasping breath as it pursued him with long-legged strides. A quick glance over his shoulder told him that it was only a hundred-odd feet away. Seeing his backwards look, a cruel grin spread across the hideous mess that passed for the ogre's face.

When Pedro looked forward again, he saw the source of its nasty pleasure: a little ways ahead, the ravine ended abruptly in a sheer vertical wall. He slowed for a moment, just long enough to manifest Spider Climb, before resuming his gliding run to the wall. His palms and fingertips briefly slicked over with a thin, greyish smear of ectoplasm that evaporated in the wind.

The dwarf hit the rocky wall at a dead run and climbed as fast as his hands would carry him. To speed his progress up the cliff face Pedro manifested Burst, filling the air with the sound of dwarven hammers ringing on anvils. A second glance (this time downwards) afforded him a birds' eye view of the ogre's upturned, puzzled face as it clambered slowly after him.

At the top of the fifty foot ravine, Pedro took his bow in hand. Psionically-charged death rained down on the exposed ogre. Realizing its only chance was to continue, it scrambled desperately to close the remaining ten feet to the top.

"You've killed enough dwarves, Ogre. I think it's time I put my foot down," Pedro called out in the Common tongue. He neither knew nor cared if the beast spoke the language.

His eyes glowed an earthy brown and the sound of smithwork was heard again as his foot came down.

Like any normal dwarf, Pedro liked to make things. He had always enjoyed crystals, gems, and jewelry. Not as decoration for himself, but simply as an art form. He could spend hours gazing into the crystalline depths, trying to find the form that wished to emerge from the raw materials. When he finished his shifts in the giant-hunting brigade, he would return home to lose himself in his jewelry work.

He did not expect to find himself in a shard of amethyst.

An infinite number of lavender-hued reflections stared Pedro straight back in the eye. Subtle differences were discernable between each image: cowering in abject terror, focussed on his latest creation, chatting amiably, determination set in his bearded face, and countless others. One stood out from all the rest, drawing his attention every time he tried to examine another. It was himself as a hero. This was the dwarf that he wanted to be - a stoic saviour.

Pedro bent his will upon this image and felt it grow within him. His mind opened outward and inward simultaneously, his brain unlocking psionic powers.

It was only a matter of time until his newfound heroic purpose led him to become a giant slayer.

ps - I don't know if the favoured enemy bonuses stack from Ranger and Slayer, but I assumed they did!
