I downloaded the 3.5 SRD, and the Mind Flayer has vanished!!

Where the heck is it?

Is it also gone from the Print Version?

What gives?

Mind Flayer, Beholder, and some other creatures were taken out of the SRD as Intellectual Property of WotC a good while back...yes, they're still in the books, just not the SRD anymore. :)

It's not OGC. It's still in the Monster Manual (both 3.0 and 3.5), but they don't want to let 3rd party writers use them. WotC considers mind flayers IP (and, arguably, OGL PI -- a discussion I don't want to get into).

Especially odd as the Mind Flayer is rather explicitly a Cthonian, especially in the original stuff from the seventies. So I'm not sure where they get off calling those "unique D&D creations".

Both Yuan-ti and Mind Flayers are based on non-D&D sources. Only Beholders seems like a D&D original to me (and I'm even sure about that).

I'm aware of beholders, mind flayers, and yuan-ti. Any others?

I've sometimes joked that the illithid are Cthulhu's illegitimate children. ;)

As for the Yuan-Ti, a lot of pulp fantasy has featured snake-like corrupt humans. I guess WotC does have a right to make some stuff non-OGC, but one has to ask what good products we might be missing because they are restricted creatures.

(I would LOVE to see an update of the old Illithiad and a similar product for the Yuan-Ti._)

The complete list, to my knowledge, is:

Beholder
Carrion Crawler
Displacer Beast
Githyanki
Githzerai
Kuo-Toa
Mind Flayer
Slaad
Umber Hulk
Yuan-ti

And the terms Tanar'ri and Baatezu.
