Called Shots

There does not appear to be any rules in 3.0 or 3.5 for called shots. I was wondering, how do DMs deal with players who wish to attack a certain area of their foes body?

Take a penalty to attack, and if you hit, apply a bonus to damage. Cf. Power Attack.

Alternatively, if you want to do "called shots" like disarming or breaking a weapon, there are already rules for those.

A called shots thread arises every few weeks or so, and it always ends with people discovering that there is no great way to do it. Maybe okay ways, but not great.

In the end Power Attack really is Called Shot. You try to hit a specific spot (which is harder thus losing attack bonus) and do more damage because it is vital (transfering that attack to damage). Works great.

if you houserule it to worked on ranged weapons, and if you allow a dex requirement rather than str its close. Otherwise, it can only approximate a called shot in some circumstances for some characters... the finesse/ranged combat types are the ones who would realisticly be making the most called shots (my tiny plinks aren't helping much, so its better to aim for the head and get a big hit...) and power attack does nothing for them.

For some reason, people who say that power attack is the called shot mechanic bug the holy hell out of me... not simply the descriptive text, but the requirements and mechanics make it very clear that as it stands, it is the almost exact opposite of a called shot. A reasonable starting point to built a called shot feat certainly, but not what people are looking for.

Any melee combatant without at least 12 Str is wasting their time, Power Attack or no Power Attack. And it's not that big a jump from 12 to 13.

In which case, could you at least pick a good subject to be bugged the holy hell out of? I hear hit points are broken.

You have it bass-ackwards. The descriptive text is off, since it talks about taking awkward but powerful blows. The mechanics, however, are exactly what called shots are about: doing more damage, but at the cost of requiring more skill to connect.

Mechanically, in 3E at least, the people who got the most out of Power Attack _were_ your finesse types. The lower your base damage, the better PA becomes, proportionally speaking.

I used to agree... until I spent a lot of time trying to figure out a "really awesome mechanic" to add called shots in. Not a whole lot works even close to well. Anything that does basically mimics Power Attack one way or another.

Power Attack really is powerful for the dex based characters as well. Sacrafice some of your finnesse away for that strength you lost. It doesn't work as well in 3.5 with the Light weapon restriction, but 3.0 works just fine.

If I were to allow Called Shots, they'd have to be a combination of a Crit and a Sneak Attack. In other words, the target would have to be flat-footed and you'd need to confirm the hit.

Something like: declare Called Shot, roll attack. If you hit but don't crit, keep rolling. If you ever roll a miss, stop rolling. If you crit, roll to confirm it. If you confirm it, great, you got a crit.

It would be a full-round action that provokes an AoO.

PS: But, I'd never allow it.

We use a feat called "Called Shot," that is exactly the same as power attack, except it can only be used for ranged weapons.

Works pretty well.
