Which is the best? How come? I'm only including the core 9, then going to Tome and Blood, and 3.5 PHB versions take precedence over T&B ones. But feel free to post metamagics that I forgot about/didn't have space for.

Edit: I didn't have room for all the T&B ones, so I just included the most appropriate, IMO.

I'm a big big fan of Still Spell...of course, that's because my PC in the only game I don't DM is an Arcane Trickster who just likes his armor way too much. :)
Energy Substitution is really fun, too...
 

It completely depends on the caster and level.

At higher levels, quicken rocks, especially with 3.5 haste.

For buffing clerics, extend and persistant are "da bomb."

For blaster mages empower and energy substitution are the best.
 


I'm presently playing a 3.0 transmuter, and my favourite's a toss up between extend and chain. Extend is awsome for buff spells (the animal buffs, GMW, keen edge, etc). Chain spell is very useful in a utilitarian manner. Chained enlarges, reduces (chain reduce + teleport is very nice), blindness/deafness, shatter, etc. are very nice to have. Nevermind combining to two: extended chained GMW (one 7th level spell, and every weapon that the party uses is GMW'd for the next 2hrs/clvl), extended chained keen edge, etc...

Chained Reduce + Teleport doesn't work in 3.5, as the limit is now based on a number of creatures rather than weight. Much better (and simpler), at least IMO.
 



Difficult to choose, almost all of them are very useful especially combined with the most appropriate spells.

I am not very fond of the ones that directly increase damage. I'd rather choose Chain Spell, Quicken Spell and Widen Spell.
