1. Give us an overview of your product line(s).
We currently have two lines of d20 supplements in the works, along with some other individual projects. First is Campaign Options, a series of d20 sourcebooks that focus on a particular theme or angle in the game that is rarely discussed or provided with as much detail, including Mazes, Wilderness Masters, Alignment, and we even have one coming out for d20 Modern called Treasure Hunter. Our second line is dubbed Adventure Settings, a couple of good ol’city settings that include a full-blown adventure. We have the Labyrinth of Oversouland the Taken City coming out by the middle of this year for that line. Then when you couple it with some other, as yet unannounced, titles due for 2004, we have a lot on the go. The key to our products is that we include an adventure is almost everything that we produce so you can buy it as a sourcebook or an adventure but preferably for both.
2. Tell us at length about your most recent project (upcoming or just released).
Campaign Options: Mazeswas just released around a month ago and is probably the prime example of the entire Campaign Optionsline. It deals with the creation, maintenance, and game time inside a maze or labyrinth. There are chapters on creating your own maze or developing an existing one to become more powerful (or possibly less powerful) using a design we called maze templates, new creatures, spells, feats, and skills, along with some revisions and suggestions (such as an expansion of the minotaur’s natural cunning ability that goes beyond “not getting lost”) that will improve playing in a maze. The key to Mazesis that it is not wholly restricted to a maze – everything in there can be used for a standard dungeon crawl. It’s just that all of these new rules and crunchy bits have been thought up with a maze in mind.
Then we have the Labyrinth of Oversoulcoming out in March (that can also be purchased in the Mazes Bundleto include both Campaign Options: Mazesand Labyrinth of Oversoul); Campaign Options: Wilderness Mastersin April; Campaign Options-Modern: Treasure Hunterin May; Campaign Options: Alignmentin June; and the Taken Cityin August. With some other projects yet to be announced, we’ll have about eight releases for 2004.
3. What is your main target audience and how much of a spread beyond that do you feel is likely, first for your line(s), then for your most recent?
Most of everyone here has been playing for 15-20 years and those are the people we’re aiming for – gamers who have done a lot, seen a lot, rolled a lot of dice and are looking for something new without just resorting to a higher level campaign. Most of our projects involve roleplaying on a more sophisticated level (with some new feats and spells to show them off with) and these ideas are compulsions that we have and need to write up before we explode, so thus we have Campaign Options:Alignment.) Others are concepts that may not have been explored as deeply as they could have been, such as with Campaign Options: Mazesand Campaign Options: Wilderness Masters. We have only come out with our first release in the past 30 days so it is a little difficult to tell just what market is actually picking up our products but as long as they’re being picked up, we’re happy.
4. What is the main thing about your company that makes you most proud?
The dedication that these guys have shown to their work. The PDF gaming industry is not one that pays financially, just in satisfaction (with a little bit of cash thrown in to take the missus out for dinner and apologize for all of those late nights locked in front of the keyboard) and I know that I’m very proud to have this small gathering of like-minded designers, artists, and editors who feel the need to create new materials for the same reason as myself.
5. Where do you see your company one year from now?
Putting the finishing touches on what might just be the largest endeavour for the PDF market: Living Nights. We have develop something called the Overlord System that would offer GMs and their players a chance to do more than just play a new campaign setting…they can shape it for all others to experience.
And making money. That would be good too.
