I'm concerned about the D&D Minis price hike. While I'm not surprised it increased, I'm surprised it increased by 30%. WotC's price increases in it's other lines haven't been nearly so drastic.

See, while I'm not going to scream "boycott" (mainly because the ineffectiveness of a internet-based boycott), I do plan to scale back my purchases dramatically. I'm the kind of guy that likes to "catch 'em all". I don't usually get into hobbies casually. Collecting D&D Minis has been a budget stretch for me (a college student), and I simply can't afford to spend 30% more on it. And I know that if I keep buying them, I'll obsesively collect them all. Therefore, I must stop! I'll probably just buy the odd single now.

I'm concerned that this might be a bad move for WotC. I can see a scenerio where people scale back purchases, or go with Mage Knight instead (which has the handy clicky bases).

And yes, I know that the paint jobs and sculpting will improve, but I don't think that justifies the price increase. If you look at the early MK figures, they were ugly. The new ones are a hojillion times better, and without a 30% price hike. The sucess of MK was enough to fuel the better molds and paint jobs alone.

Where I play D&D Minis, 90% of the people there are playing a clix-base game. D&D Minis, besides the D&D name, had only the price point going for it. That was it's one advantage over MK, which had moving parts and better sculpts. Now, D&D Minis no longer has the price advantage (though they may now have equivalent sculpts and/or paint jobs; we haven't seen the final versions yet).

Anyway, just wanted to say that.

EDIT: For the purposes of the poll, assume that the paint/sculpt job quality increases little, if at all (it should also be noted that Mage Knight sculpt and paint jobs got a lot better in subsequent releases without a big price bump).

What about everyone else? How will it affect you?

I only bought them every so often anyway, even though I'd LIKE to get them again and again, I just don't have the money. So really, it doesn't affect me that much.

I submitted "never bought, and still wont" ... but I wanted to clarify. Money has been tight for the past several years, but recent events threaten to leave me with a meager budget for the hobby. It still isn't much, but it is a whole lot better than nothing. :)

Anyway, I never bought the minis but I was seriously thinking of getting into them now that I'll have a little extra cash. But with the raise in price, and the fact that I wasn't really impressed with 50% of the minis I saw, I'm just going to stay away from them.

I can't really vote in this poll. I bought a starter set and a Dragoneye expansion just this past Saturday. I'm so disappointed in the overall quality of the miniatures that I won't be buying any more anyway. I have several thousand miniatures in my collection and consider these amongst the worst I have ever seen.

Money is not my driving factor with miniatures. Quality is. I would prefer to spend many times more money for a much higher quality product. I understand the niche WoTC went after with their mini game and minis, I just don't happen to fit into that niche.

Where do you store all of them? I keep mine on an open bookcase. I have 300 and I can't store them so I can see them and get to them.

(end hijack)

I'll buy less because of the price increase but I plan to buy a bunch of the newer ones. They are a high enough quality for me.

Wow, I didn't even catch the news about a price hike, until now. I'll probably go with the Fiery Dragon counters myself. Seems like more bang for the buck to me, plus they are easier to store. (You also don't have to worry about them constantly falling over)

I love the minis, but I said "Spend the same". I don't really mind that WotC is raising the price, and understnad some sound buisiness reasons for it, but I'm already spending what I can realistically afford. To be honest, it might puch me into buying cases online, if I can figure the psotage.

It won't effect me much I use mostly Reaper figs

I bought 2 boxes and 2 starters but the minis didn't impress me for the most part

I do want a couple of the goblins though-- I liked those

BFG lays it down for ya

No poll vote for me, but:

The most cost effective way to buy the D&D mini's ( assuming you will use them for RPG's only ) is by buying on the secondary market.

I just bought 50 mini's for less than it would cost me to buy 3 $9.99 expansion packs.

Check it out ( from my Cardhaus.com order ):
