Just got my monthly mailing from SFBC and they've got a listing for Midnight Sun, a collection of short stories by Karl Edward Wagner featuring his immortal swordsman Kane.

I have been trying to track down the Kane books for YEARS! I had found Bloodstone and Dark Crusade at used book stores but have had no luck finding anything else until just recently. I just finished Gods In Darkness a couple months ago. Darkness Weaves was incredible! I am super psyched to be able to get more Kane!

I couldn't agree more with Teflon Billy. Darkness Weaves is a masterpiece, and the rest of the Kane stuff I've read (all the novels, and the short stories that were collected in the old paperbacks) was excellent as well. I've been planning on getting the new hardcover collections anyway (my paperbacks were lost in a move years ago), and if the SFBC has 'em I might as well sign up like I've been meaning to for ages.

Sell me on the Kane books. Whats the basic premise? Why do you like them so much? I've heard people rave about them, and others that hate them, but I don't know much about them.

Kane is Kane from the bible, the curse was that he can only be killed by violence he brought to man. The world is almost CoC, elder gods and magi-tech. Kane is an anti-hero, he sees things long term, that of passing generations. The stories take place all through his life, wizard, bandit, assassin, general, king, adventurer and are on the dark side and well written, Kane has a lot of depth.

I always enjoyed the werewolf story and the hunt for Kane by the good guy in the ruins. :)

Can they be read out of order, or is the sequence important? I'd hate to pick up Midnight Sun if I really should read the others first.

If you had to pick one book to read from the series to recommend to someone, which one would it be?

They don't need to be read in order. I would definitely read Gods In Darkness first. It includes Bloodstone, Dark Crusade, and Darkness Weaves. All are excellent. Dark pulpy fun. Yeah, Kane is THE Caine, but that isn't really dwelt on. He's basically an immortal that is just so bored that he comes up with schemes to conquer nations and rule the world. Kane is definitely a villain, but you still root for him.

SFBC offers Gods In Darkness and Midnight Sun right now, I think exclusively. I haven't seen them offered anywhere else. Anyone know about the other books that Hand of Evil mentioned? Are they included in Midnight Sun? I MUST HAVE THEM.
