North Carolina Game Day IV: May 8

Rel

Liquid Awesome
It's that time again, folks! Another NC Game Day is afoot!

The "short list" of important facts:

The date is May 8
The place is the same (Talley Student Center at NC State)
Times will be the same (Roughly 9AM until 8PM and then dinner afterwards)
There will be a Pre-Dinner on Friday night. I see no compelling reason not to have this at Errico's again but I'm willing to listen to other options.
We will be partnering with Trinocon and GAMER again.

More in depth info (this section may grow in the weeks ahead so I might refer folks back to this post from time to time):

I would like to use the awesome NC Game Day website that Neal set up for us to do all of the scheduling: http://ncgameday.dhorizon.org/

If you haven't signed up there already, please do so! We'll use that thread for all scheduling and you are of course welcome to post info about games you would like to run or play in at the forums there. Please understand that this does not in any way signal a move away from the Game Day affiliation with ENWorld. It is simply more convenient to do the scheduling this way and cuts out a lot of the errors that have crept in in the past when we relied strictly on the memory of myself and Henry to add, delete and move people to and from various games.

The setup will be a bit different this time around. We (ENWorld) "officially" have reserved a space on the 3rd floor of Talley that we've never played in before. It is somewhere between the size of the Blue Room and Walnut Room for those who have attended in the past. This is almost perfect for us size-wise. The only problem is that all of the rooms reserved by Trinocon are on the 4th floor. They are going to specifically designate one of those rooms as a "roleplaying room". Neal and I talked about this and we have both agreed to share space back and forth. This may mean that you are playing in a game on the 3rd floor in the morning and the 4th floor in the afternoon or something like that. It will also hopefully encourage some intermingling of our attendees a bit.

Finally there is the issue of the dining on both Friday and Saturday nights. After NCGDIII, Neal told me that many of the Trinocon folks thought it was a great idea to get together for a meal and have some time to tell war-stories obout the games of the day and so forth. Considering that it is likely that the Trinocon crowd and ENWorld attendees will be participating in many of the same games, it would be nice to invite them to this dinner. But the fact is that if we still wanted to use Rock-Ola as our venue, I don't think it could physically accomodate a much larger group than we had last time without some rather funky table arrangements. The idea I had was this:

We keep the Friday night dinner just like it was last time as essentially an event for ENWorlders only. This gives a chance to mingle in person with the folks who you mingle with virtually on a day to day basis here on the boards. But for Saturday night dinner, I was thinking that rather than try to go to a restaurant, we could see if we can arrange to have the food brought to us. Specifically I was thinking that we could either do the "mother of all pizza orders" or get a local sub shop to make us a couple of those 6' party subs, or some combination of the two.

This would mean a couple of positive things IMHO: We don't have to actually go anywhere. We don't have to wait when we get there for them to setup 20 tables to accomodate us. We have plenty of table space already available. We can hang out for quite a while (I think we officially have the space until midnight) without any waitress giving us the stink-eye because we finished our food two hours ago and are just hanging out chatting about Beholders and crap. And it will probably be considerably cheaper per person if that's a consideration for you.

There are some potential pitfalls to this situation: I will have to find out what the university's policy is about bringing in food like this. I've been given to understand that they like to hold a monopoly on prepared food and whatnot. If so, this may kill this idea before it even gets off the ground, but I'll look into this in the next few days and let you know. The only other downside I can see is that we would have to coordinate the collection of money for this meal somehow. For pizza, this will presumably not be a problem. If we do the Sub thing, we might need to take up a collection from those who wish to partake when they arrive in the morning. Then maybe we can con some poor woman (I'm specifically thinking of my wife) into heading down to the local sub place and putting in our order to be picked up in the evening.

That's about all I've got for the moment. Any questions or comments on the above info are welcome of course. I'll be checking this thread and the forums at the NC Game Day site regularly and feel free to get in touch with me via e-mail if you need to. Just don't put "Hey" or something nondescript like that in the subject line or I might think it is spam and chuck it. "ENWorld" would probably catch my attention though.

Can't wait to game with you guys again! :D

Now I shall engage in a brief, "Henry-Style" poll of what sorts of game I should run:

1) A conversion of a 1E or even Basic D&D module to 3E.

2) An ACTUAL 1E or Basic D&D module or adventure.

3) Another d20 Modern "Sky Galleons of Mars" game (I gotta get some more play out of those model ships I built)

4) A d20 Star Wars game.

5) One of the 3E modules I've run in the past (Return to the Dungeons of the Slave Lords or Orcz!)

Any of those sound good?

Not to be too wishy washy, but I'd love to play in any of 1, 2, or 3. (not that I wouldn't play in 4 or 5) If I really have to choose one of them, I'd go with number 2. BTW, Red Box is Basic Set. OD&D is a different animal, as Diaglo would be more than happy to tell you. ;)

On a side note, you need to update your sig. This is Game Day IV now!

I've been thinking about this recently, and I'm seriously thinking about running two games instead of running/playing as in the previous days. On the good side, More games means less people left in the cold with slots. On the bad side, I don't get to experience the wackiness that is another DM. Also in conctention is whether the turnout will be as strong as it was for the last gameday (I'm doubting it because of exams at NCSU and other Univ's that week.)

Here's what I'm thinking. I schedule to Play/Run as before; if the turnout unexpectedly booms, I'll drop out of my "play" slot and schedule another game. That creates anywhere from 5 to 7 slots if they are needed (the 4 to 6 I'll run plus what I vacate.)

My thoughts on games to run:

  • Spycraft ("The Replacement Spy-Killers")
  • ORIGINAL D&D (Fightning Men, Clerics, and Magic-Users only allowed) - give some people a chance to see how it really was! (Heck, I'd do it just to see if Diaglo would drive from Atlanta...:D)
  • Continuum ("Invitation to Dance" - one of the best time-travelling games ever developed!)
  • d20 Modern (a sequel to "Department 7 - Zombie Fighters")
  • Freeport (D&D in a swashbucklin', freebootin', scurvy-pirate settin'! Arrh!)
Thats just a few running around in my head - better for me to sit on it over the weekend, and see if I'm missing a better choice.

Zat' better? ;)

I'd better make a note of that whole OD&D/Red Box thing and fix it in the post above. I don't want diaglo getting on my case.

Hi, folks --

This is my first time posting in an NC Game Day thread, but I'd definately be excited about meeting some of you folks and running a game myself.

Right now I'm looking at running a scenario from Unknown Armies or Sorcerer, but I could also do d20 Modern (although it looks like that may be well covered).

Thanks for the update; I'd wanted to jump in on this one or two NCGD's ago but hadn't had the chance.

We'd be glad to have you! We'e not averse to any game system, as long as it's fun! If you haven't already done so, please register also over at the NC Gameday official site (the link is in the first post in this thread). Over there you can submit whatever game you want to run, and what slot (morning 9-2 or afternoon 3-8) you want to run it in.

We'll be glad to see you!
