Blood Will Tell: D20 Modern in London (Closed)

morrolan

First Post
She dwelleth and abideth on the rock, upon the crag of the rock and the strong place.
From thence she seeketh the prey, and her eyes behold afar off.
Her young ones also suck up blood; and where the slain are, there is she.
Job 39:28-30

Are you sweet?
Are you fresh?
Are you strung up by the wrists?

We want the young blood.

We Suck Young Blood - Radiohead

Ok, here it is. Against my better judgement, I'm gonna run a d20 modern adventure here. With some caveats. ;)

First, I'm not quite finished with the writing of the thing yet, but I figure getting these things up and running takes a while, so I should be ready to go when the characters are ready.

Second, I'll give a disclaimer paraphrased from Blood and Relics, some content of which I'll be using. The game will play fast and loose with religious history, so fair warning if you get offended with that sort of thing. As Blood and Relics says though, none of the content is engineered to offend, but i just wanted my bases covered. Really, if Holy Blood Holy Grail / Da Vinci Code type stuff is fine by you, you should be ok.

Nitty-gritty. Set in (fictional) London, England, 2004. Probably branch out to other locales in the British Isles. I'm English, but haven't lived there for about a decade, so no complaints if I screw something up. :) Characters start at level 2, basic classes only, 30 point buy. If you want, you can play an aasimar from Urban Arcana at the cost of one of your levels. If your concept is really, really good, you can play a tiefling, but likely that will be too problematic.

[edit] Expect a fairly low-magic setting, but not no-magic.

I will take 4-5 players. Post your intention to play here, but do NOT post your character concept/stats here yet. Mail your concept to me first, and when I've ok'ed it then we'll work up the stats. If the response is overwhelming, I'll pick players based on how well their concept fits, not necessarily first come, first serve.

Hope this sounds fun to everyone, and I'm looking forward to seeing what you all come up with!

A bit more on the style/influences of the game.

In essence the recipe I'm using is as follows:

A big steaming bowl of Hellblazer/John Constantine style adventure. Please pick out any Keanu Kernels before baking.
A healthy shot of Religious conspiracy theory, ala Da Vinci Code or Holy Blood, Holy Grail.
Bung in some secret societies for good measure.
Mix in some of the darker aspects of Celtic myth to taste.
Stir with an eye towards the philosophy of Heraclitus.
Powder with just a dash of Pulpy Goodness (See Indy and the Last Crusade).

PC's will be "normies" to start with, and will get pulled into wierder, wilder stuff as the game progresses. The powers of "good" and "evil" are gearing up for the apocalypse, so it would behoove you to pick a side.

I intend on using custom-designed foes and creatures, hopefully I'll not have to wheel out the same old stuff for you. Posting on the game would ideally be 2-3 times a week, with emphasis on the weekends.

Cheers

Good to have you aboard Jarval. :)

When you get a chance email me your character concept. I don't want the players to know too much about each other just yet, and I may tinker some things about. As soon as I decide upon things, I'll put up a rogues gallery. Other than that, the only stricture is that you are essentially a normal-type in London (living, working, vacationing etc.).

I musn't
I can't
I shouldn't
I'll be strong

Aaargh bugger it, count me in. better to wield in to temptation and regret it later then to wonder what it would've been like :D .
I've got a few character ideas allready, what's the background/starting thingy? Modern england as we know it? Any specifics to start with, like evryone is a university student, we're all police, we're all 85 and start in an old-peoples home when something starts moving in the bowl of porridge?

Yup, see above, London, England pretty much as you know it. Most any normal occupation will work. And how the hell did you figure out my "porridge plot"? Damn, I'll have to start from scratch...
;)

I would like in on this one, also.

Upfront: I have yet to play d20 Modern (since buying the book) since my table-top gaming group is still in the midst of a great D&D game, so I'm looking forward to getting my sea-legs here.

Also, I am an American, so I think we all need to decide right now: should I a) not even attempt English phrases and such (the best way to do this would be to make an American character simply living in England, perhaps), or b) roleplay the English terminology and phrases and such, with us all knowing full well that I may butcher them. The former might be safer, but I would like the learning experience of the latter, but you'll have to be patient and understanding if we go that route.

I have some preliminary concepts I need to flesh out a little more before posting.

Glad to have you here!

Do what fits your concept best, but don't fret about accuracy of speech too much. I've lived in the US long enough that I 'pass' as American, and I'm sure odd phrases will slip in. And you can always justify a mistake by saying that your character picked it up from a movie or tv show. I think you could find some american/english 'phrasebooks' online if you want to swot up a bit.

Again, mail your concept to me first, and I'll post 'em to a rogues gallery after i've made sure everything is kosher.
