So, um, which parts of d20 *are* used? It sounds like just about everything was thrown out!

Well, the main mechanic of roll 1d20 and add appropriate modifiers is used. (As opposed to the many percentile rolls used in 1e and 2e). Other than that, most everything tries to emulate 1e D&D.

C&C sounds very cool, but when is it coming out? I couldn't find a release date on that Troll Lords site.

I'm not sure, but I think the Troll Lord guys said that they were hoping to have the initial rule book out by summer.

Castles and Crusades, which takes its name from Gygax's original gaming society, promises to be a d20 lite system. Although it uses the basic d20 system, it strips it down to its bare bones and rebuilds it in a way that emulates 1e.

Does noone else find the goals expressed in those two sentences to be mutually exlcusive? 1e wasn't exactly rules lite...

Actually, from the description given above, C&C sounds a lot like the Moldavay edition of Basic D&D - which was pretty rules light - along with some 1e classes added in.

Frankly, I am looking forward to the advent of C&C, and even more to Castle Zagyg!

Hehe. :)

1E had a version that was fairly rules-light. It was the version that I always played - and I guess a lot of people did as well. It used Moldvay initiative and surprise, and ignored weapon speeds, weapons vs. armour and a bunch of other stuff like that.

What you ended up with was pretty rules-light and fun. A pity that the AD&D books weren't written that way, actually.

What we seem to have in C&C is a combination of various rules systems. The basics of d20, the variety of AD&D class/race choices, and the simplicity of Moldvay ability scores.

With the "emulation of 1E", it probably means that you could throw C&C monster stats into a AD&D game and not have any problems with regards to balance or readability.

Although I love 3.5E, I fully support a simpler system for those who don't enjoy the deep immersion in rules that 3.5E can be.

Cheers!

Check the TLG messageboards for more info.

Last I heard they plan to officially release it at Milwaukee Game FEst in July.
