Over the past half year or so the amount of fan reviews has really decreased. Reviews are a great way to get your opinion heard and to tell people what your thoughts on a book are. So, I'm just wondering why people don't write reviews.

I still write reviews... but I only take the time to do it when the product in question hasn't been reviewed before. Then I get to find out later that no one agreed with my assement [see my review of the complete warrior]

The lack of reviews is due to a couple of factors, I think. First is people are buying fewer games. Or at least that it is impression from the recent poll on these boards. Second, there seems to be a group of dedicated reviewers (psion and the rest of the ENWorld people, the D20 Magazine Rack review board). These people can write good reviews, and people reading reviews begin to expect this level of a writing in a review. I know I can't write reviews to the standard set by these people. Partly because I don't have the depth of D20 knowledge and partly because I just can't write that well without a lot of work.

Let's Hear It For Apathy!

Most of the books and PDFs I find myself buying don't make enough of an impression on me for me to spend my time on reviewing them. This may be due to the glutted market, or my increasing apathy toward the hobby.

I rarely have the spare time to write a thoughtful review; equally, I prefer to actually get all the way through the book and use it in a campaign to some extent before getting around to reviewing it, thus the reviews would be far from "timely".

RPG books don't go stale. I'm still using seceral from the early days of third edition as well as second and first edition items. My gaming stores still sell many of these older books, so I do not think it matters if a revierw is timely or not.

I largely only buy very popular books. They already have lots of reviews by the time I get them.

Even the most populiar books have only a dozen reviews, and they are very few. Besides it doesn't matter if a book has zero reviews of thirty, that should no prevent you from writing a review.

I've just started writing up reviews. I find that if it's a newer publisher they would give you a free copy of the work (especially if it's PDF), but I would like to do it more and more but I don't know how to contact publishers to get review material or whom to goto.

It boils down to 'lack of product' and not lack of time. I can hammer out a review in 3 days of reading your typical 96page product and posting it online.
